Id like some input from the guys who have been using wheel houses. Ive never owned one but am on the market to get one. What are some things that are a must have and things that are just too cool not to have. Im looking at a 8×20 with a pretty open layout.

    Thanks in advance

Light weight construction: aluminum “studs” in the walls and closed cell foam insulation are two construction elements I would absolutely demand as I’ve seen more than a few “stick built” houses that were warped and twisted all to heck after two years of use. Why does a 20 x 8 have to weight 3500+ pounds?

I’d want a light weight design that had the capability to be converted easily to skis out on the ice so I could easily tow it with a snowmobile or 4 wheeler. I want a permanent so I can stay out on the ice and be close to the fish. As soon as I have to stay close to my permanent because I can’t get it near the fish… the whole concept falls apart for me.

A house “drop” system that doesn’t rely on the “cable and winch” style system to lower the house. Sooner or later you’ll break the cable. Count on it.

This is the permanent that I think comes closest to being a “mobile-permanent.” http://www.customcottagesinc.com

For me, Number one is weight. A light shelter means I can load it up with gear and I’ll be able to move more easily. Next is the wheel system. Crank-cable systems work but aren’t as dependable as newer systems in terms of stability and load capabilities.
Lastly on my importance list is the ability to use it year round. In the past few years MN anglers have had very limited time to use their wheel houses. Lately 2 months is the wheel house season. Thats way too short of a season to justify the spending.

In terms of gadgets and gizmos,……I’ve always been a fan of those who have hooked up satelite TV. What a great addition That and a flatscreen with a Honda EU generator As long as you have those items, you’ll have plenty of thinking time to dream up many more things.
