    Hi all,

There’s been a LOT of questions behind the scenes regarding the proper oil to use in a Solo auger and the correct oil mixture ratio required to preserve the powerhead warranty.

In-Depth Outdoors received this information directly from Solo’s Technical Director, Richard Costa:

    Quote:

Solo’s position is that as long as a good quality two cycle oil (regular or synthetic) is used and the mixture ratio is no higher than 50:1, the warranty remains intact.

“A good quality oil” is one that meets the following ratings ISO-L-EGD, JASO FD. Most name brand two cycle oils on the market will meet these requirements. Strikemaster’s own in-house oil meets these requirements. And, for those that like to run synthetics, running a synthetic, as long as it meets the requirements above, will also NOT void your warranty.

The big thing to remember here is to not go any leaner with the oil mixture than 50:1 regardless of oil used. Doing so would void your warranty.

For more information on Strikemaster auger use and care, check out Strikemaster’s video section on their website. There’s a ton of great information to be found that should answer just about any question you could possible have about your Strikemaster auger. Link >>> http://www.strikemaster.com/video.html

The very first thing out of Strikemasters mouth when I called about this after I purchased my solo, was infact the oil. The strikemaster oil is really all you need. The obviously have planned to have there oil approved to run the new solo engines without warranty issues. Also I was informed that mixture is also the key 50:1.

Yup, the main issue is guys pushing the envelop with ultra-lean oil / gas mixtures. 70, 80 and even 100:1 ratios have been promoted as acceptable for use in the past by some oil manufacturers and Strikemaster is trying to get the word out that those lean mixtures will void the warranty on the Solo powerheads.

I mixed my gas / oil last year at 40:1 and never had any smoking, starting or fouling issues at all.

SM makes it so simple. Dump in one little container of oil. Add 1 gallon of gas. Shake and start drilling. I like idiot proof!!

I use Amsoil Saber Professional and it is a 100:1 mix. I have run it for 7 years in my strikemaster and have no problems and still get oil comming out of my muffler. I never use it at 100:1. I put in a little less then a gal of gas per packet that is pre mixed for 1 gal of gas. I understand that for the break in time I would use a lower mix but after one season ramp it back up. The warranty is 2 years on the new Solo so use there oil till then.
