My buddy and I are looking to make a reservation for an ice house rental in late January or early February on either Mille Lacs or Leech lake. I have never rented an ice house before nor have I ever been on either of these lakes. I would like suggestions and links if possible to your favorite ice house rentals. If there is anything I should avoid or look for? Any helpful advice on what we need to bring that may not be obvious would be great too. I am looking to keep the price under $600 for a 4 day Thursday – Sunday rental.

    Thanks,

    Russ

ML can be a tough bite for for ice, mobility is generally key. But if you do choose to go to ML stay away from Eddys, their houses never move. Hunters Point, Red Door but Hunter Winfields probly has the nicest houses of all the resorts. Not trying to talk down on the lake but Winter is tougher and to keep me interisted I Have to chase perch in the noon hours. And yes I do fish there a lot in winter.
    Have no knowledge of Leech…
Red Lake can be great but there are some sketchey rentals there sometimes.
But if you want what I would consider the best chance of great action go to Lake of the Woods. Not a nite bite lake so no need for sleeper but I think Adrians does have them. The great part about LOW is if you are on fish, they bite all day. Walleye at low light and Sauger better at daylight hours. Call Wigwam and get a pkg set up for a cabbin and two days fishing. Make sure atleast one of those days is out on the reefs, It is a 25mi bombardier ride but the fishing is generally HOT out there. I have stayed there when we go in big groups and it is good. Also the IDO guys do Sturgen Excursion there and If I remember correctly his name is JP who manages the place is on IDO often. It is deff worth the drive!!! –Mark

I’d recommend you go to Mille Lacs early and you should catch fish. Fishing is usually good early and sometimes it’s even great. As stated it can get tough later in the year. I like Mille Lacs because the fish normally bite all night long

As for where to go I’ll be willing to bet you can’t find a nicer bunch of people than the ones at McQuoids resort in Isle. I’ll be honest I guide out of there, but that’s not why I’m saying it. I’m saying it because I get to see how they treat their customers and it blows my mind. They will do anything they can to accomidate your every need. They never stop running, it’s always customers first

Oh ya and they have VERY nice houses! Good luck!

One more vote for Lake of the Woods, it truly has been worth the extra drive. I do not know much about Leech, but I live across the road from Mille Lacs. One down side to LotW that time of year is you can get 3 day stretches where it goes down to -30 at night and daytime highs are -20. I just do not enjoy ice fishing in those conditions.

Macs Twin Bay is great too. Kevin is the son of Terry McQuoid so that would explain the great service at both places. Can’t go wrong with either place.
