What horse power are you guy going to get? I’m getting the 8″ but am on the fence about horse power.

3 HP for this guy. Now that there’s no weight penalty for the extra ponies I can’t think of any reason to not have the added power for those times when I want to turn a 10″ bit.

    Forrester:

I’m with James on this, as I’ll be running the 3HP model as well. The only possible penalty I can think of with the 3HP motor, given that they’re all the same weight – just bored out a bit for larger models, could be fuel consumption. After speaking with the guys at Strikemaster regarding this, the number of holes drilled on a tank of gas might shrink a bit, but we’re still talking into the low hundreds per-tank.

We’ll know more with some extensive testing this winter, but I dare you to burn a tank!

I’ll buy you a golf stroke counter. You get to be the guinea pig that figures out how many holes you get off a tank of gas.

Thanks for the info guys! I was hearing great reviews of the Saber oil, but with this new engine I will stick to what Strikemaster says until we know more. Thanks Again!

I think the driving force in the past behind going with the very lean mixtures, regardless of brand, was to overcome hard starting, cut down on the smoke… and to optimize power from power heads that were putting out “just enough” but nothing extra. I just don’t see starting issues on the horizon for the Solo motors and lack of power will NOT be an issue. Smoking was marginal and noticeable reduced from the tecumseh motors of the past when I used these augers last season at 40:1. If this holds true for the majority of users I just don’t think many will risk their auger to save a few ounces of oil.

It will be very interesting to see how these new augers, from both manufacturers, are adopted by the ice angler this coming season.
