I use an 18vlt dewalt on a 5 inch lazer auger. It works super slick on ice less than a foot. I can get about 20 holes per battery. I carry 3 batterys at all times and make sure you keep them dry and covered. When the ice gets over a foot is when it struggles. you can still cut holes but the amount drastically goes down. I usually go through 2 sets of blades a year. Make sure you get a good adapter with a fail safe bar because at sometime that auger is going to detach. You can use a 6 inch but a 5 is the way to go in my book. if you plan on cutting some real thick stuff look into power auger. Hopefully this helps, Dan

I use a Milualkee and have also used a Makita a few times. The Makita is nice because it is much smaller and lighter that the Milualkee. I use it on a 4″ becaues I just use it to drill holes for the flasher. THen I will drill a bigger hole. I usually never carry more than one battery because the 4″ cuts through quick, even through 18″ or more.

I have B&D Firestorm and it also works well. One thing you have to keep in mind is the torque power. The more torque is the way to go. If memory is right I think anything over 400 in-lbs will work pretty good. The Firestorm is 440 in-lbs. I have a 5 inch lazer.
