Last week I got a chance to spend a few quality days on the ice with my good friend Dan. On the drive up north we were talking about the lakes we were planning to hit, with high hopes of cashing in on some sumo pannies. Dan had a couple of detailed maps along and we hammered out our plan of attack, which made the drive up go very fast. We had two wheelers loaded up and our plan was to put a few miles on them fishing lakes way back in the woods. Lucky for us we really did not put to many miles on the wheelers before we found the fish. The bad news was, we put more miles on hopping holes then we did on the wheelers. The fish were on the move, and to stay on active fish we had to move a lot. We drilled a lot of holes and if we were lucky we could catch 2-3 fish from one hole and then it was dead. Move two feet away to the next hole and same thing. After 2 full days of this our backs were crushed and our knees were shot, we did however fish the third day, but not as hard. I fished one bait the entire trip and that was a jiggin spoon made by Custom Jigs and Spins. I have to say, I need a lot more of these bad boys. The crappies were pounding it and the gills loved it too. The flutter on this spoon is amazing, and there was not another spoon in my box that could stand up to it, or Dan’s box either, which happened to be left behind in my garage The weather we had made the ice change fast. When we left on Sunday the ice was very dark and I am sure this rain has done somemore damage. For me, this was a great end to the ice season, and the hardest I have worked to stay on fish all season. Now its time to get the boat ready for ice out pies with the kids. If you head out on the ice, please fish with a friend and be safe, its getting really bad out there
