and the late ice bite will kick into high gear. We have had some strange weather systems as of late, and the fishing has been tough. We have some nice weather on the way and soon the truck traffic will be off the lake and well be down to ATV’s only. That is when the late ice bite makes me go crazy. The fish move and start to stage in front of spawning bays and when this happens, you can be in for some great days on the ice.
I have been spending a lot of time on the ice with my old man this year. In the second pic, Dad and I had drilled a lot of holes and did a lot of hoppin befor we got on the gills. Once we got on the fish, we had a guy come in and park right on top of us. My dad is out on the ice, and I was down on the far end in the shack, and you can see when my friend set up
The bite has been really good on days when we have a front push in, but it seems like the high preasure really shuts things down fast. Staying on the move and drilling a lot of holes has been the only way to stay on active fish. This will change in the comming weeks, and I for one can’t wait for late ice.

Really nice crappie there man. How big is that pig? I too have been patiently waiting the arrival of the late ice panfish frenzy and have had limited success, Need some run off into the lakes I think to get them going better.

That crappie is my new PB, it was 15 inches. I got it on a Slender Spoon (Thanks Cal), tipped with red spikes. The crappie showed up on the flasher just a foot or two right under the ice.

The weather the next week is gonna put us right on the cusp of the staging bite. The water should start warming very fast as this latest snow runs off with the 50 degree temps predicted.

Cool, that crappie is a real huckleberry! Good luck with the late ice buddy. Hopefully we can all see Alex holding up a few pannie beasts

Dandy Speck Bob! If you wanna see those slender spoons in action for BIG specks swing down here some time! Iowa white crappies gobble them up-

What color and size did you catch it on? If I am on a good crappie bite, they have no problem slamming the 1/8 ounce size.

Just don’t get any wild ideas and use the slender spoons during open water for big crappies…

Beauty Slab Bob!! I haven’t used those slender spoons for slabs yet. Haven’t been able to find a reason to switch up from Diamonds and gil pils. Sure can’t argue with those results Bob!! I’m with ya on late ice!! BRING IT ON ALREADY!! Heck I’m tired up filling propane tanks!! LOL!! Hey Bob I think it would be fun to take some of your smaller Muskie gear after the early season Rainy Pike!! Might not get the numbers, but might get the BIG GIRL!! We’ve got plenty of bruisers!!

I have a bunch of smaller prototype’s from Dunwright that would work awesome on big pike. We just may have to talk about that when the time comes. Big pike rock

Thank Cal, I am heading up to the cabin next week, I will have to toss the extension in with the gear. How was the bite yesterday?

I will let Matt talk about the fish….

funny thing is that lake with a lot of snow, no extension is needed….Mille lacs has a lot of the snow blown off the lake, so lots of ice…smaller lakes such as Ann Lake near Ogilive have less ics because of all the snow… I would bring the extension just in case….
