I have a niece who is hoping to make it up to the Twin Cities this weekend, and would like to get out and do some ice fishing. Since I haven’t been out at all this year, I was wondering if someone could point me to which lakes have any kind of a crappie bite going, or a baitshop that would be helpful.

    Thanks

i would recomend going to lake independance the fish are really small this year but its been a very consitant bite, over by the island in 30 ft of water has been working well for me but remember they are small, so if youre looking to get a meal also it could take u all day till u get enough keepers to get a meal.

theres one other spot you could try but its a bit of a drive, but the fish are alot bigger! Ripple lake north of mille lacs, not as consistant of a bite but nice fish.

If you are looking for non-stop action from mostly smaller fish with a few nicer ones mixed in I would recommend Island Lake off 694 and Victoria, it is great for kids. Joe’s Sporting Goods is nearby for bait. You can easily catch 100+ fish in a few hours. Just set up anywhere near the one deeper hole in 8-12 feet. Tons o’ Crappies and Sunnies.

I probably should mention my niece is in her mid-twenties, so I don’t need non-stop action to keep her busy. Probably more interested in getting a few fish to bring home for supper, even if we have to sort through a few.

The fishing at Prior it starting to pick back up. You can end up with some decent sunfish and a few crappies if you are willing to work a little at it. I had to spend over a hour to find a spot with decent fish, but once I did locate them they were nice sized. The area to the left (East) of the sportsmans access is always a good place to start your search. Best of luck to you!!!!
