Considering picking up a 2017 F150 or Expedition with the EcoBoost. I’m confident it will handle my boat, no problem. My question is whether it will pull our 20′ enclosed snowmobile trailer, with four sleds, four otters, augers, gear, and an extra 100 gallons of fuel. Can the EcoBoost handle this trailer and set up?

I only tow about 10% of all my miles, probably a total of 4,000 miles per year. So the EcoBoost seems like a great option for the non-towing miles. Help me out. Thoughts?

My buddy at the lake drags his 20′ Lund to Arizona and back with his F-150. I don’t think you will have a problem.

It’s their big motor for the f150, so yes, it will handle it just fine.

I have a ‘15 with the 3.5 and tow a 20 glass boat all over the state. I smile every time I accelerate.

FYI, the ecoboost isn’t as good as the 5.0 on gas, from what I hear.

Depends on how equipped, but they can handle over 11,000#’s.

F-150? Could be the 3.5 or the 5.0 V8. Which leads me to my next question…

So how is the 3.5 bigger than the 5.0 V8? Eco-Boost or not, a 3.5 liter engine is not “bigger” than a 5.0 liter.

No matter. To the OP, the 5.0 which I have in my 150 would be no problem. And good furthermore, those with the 3.5 Eco-Boost also testifying that would also be enough for your demands.

My mom just picked one up and went through this with her horse trailer. Granted it’s a gooseneck but shes pulls about 13k#s. Big old steel trailer with couple horses in there. Handles it well enough. Brake controller she says is great.

So how is the 3.5 bigger than the 5.0 V8? Eco-Boost or not, a 3.5 liter engine is not “bigger” than a 5.0 liter.

    3.5 ecoboost
    – 470 ft-lbs torque
    – 375 hp

    5.0
    – 400 ft-lbs torque
    – 395 hp

Both powerful engines, the 3.5 was the only max tow pkg engine for a while because it had the most torque. The 3.5 is rated for more towing lbs too.

The Ecoboost is all about available torque at a given rpm. It excels at providing high torque at lower rpms. So when I’m towing and come up to a long uphill stretch, it rarely even down shifts to get up to the hill. My old 5.3L, used to drop two gears and scream all the way to the top.

Don’t start thinking that you will get great gas mileage just because you have a 6 cyl. It’s fine, but not special.

The next truck, I will likely go back to an 8 cyl but drops to 4 cyl when lightly loaded and the new 10 speed transmission. From what I have seen, they are getting the mileage improvement and can use the transmission to keep from screaming up the hill.

I agree with everything you said plus the ecoboost is a lot of fun to drive.

I love that engine in my Explorer, faster than my old Mustang GT!

It will tow it no problem. I’ve got the 5.0 and it handles my 20′ enclosed deck-over fully loaded no problem, so I have no issues recommending the 3.5 Eco. My neighbor pulls his 28′ camper with his 3.5 Eco F-150 with a sway control hitch all the way to AZ every year with no problems.

Just think the kind of power and suspension was pulling trailers that size in the 80’s and 90’s, these newer vehicles can tow some serious loads without a problem.
