Metro Area Deer Hunt 10.28.08

Well, I did not see much to get excited about but it was still worth it this morning. Last night I was looking at the forcasted low temperatures for this morning. They were going to be in the lower 20’s and it had me itching to get into the stand. I met a buddy and sat in the North Metro this morning on a great piece he has. Waking up and on the way there my truck saw 23 degrees and that had me excited and a lil’ culture shocked as most of my hunts have been in the 70’s to 80’s this year.

I met my buddy at the property and the stand I would be sitting in was located in a nice thick hardwoods funnel between bedding and a few different food sources. I got settled in my stand long before shooting light and about 15 minutes before shooting light the action started as I heard the frozen crispy leaves crunching underneath the foot steps of a on coming deer. The sound was getting louder and louder as my heart started to quicken form the anticipation. I was struggling to see exactly where this deer was as my ears and eyes tried to work as a team to pin point this deer’s location in the dawns low light conditions. Finally I picked up movement, but could not make much out until I glassed him with my Nikon ATB’s. Yep, I said him. This buck was making his way down my left side and behind me now making his way to the security of his bedroom before the day begins and the night fades. With the low light coniditons, I could not quite make out this buck even at the short distance of around 20 yards.

Only a few short minutes later a doe and her two fawns make their way down the exact same path as the buck previous. However, these deer bed within 50 yards of my stand directly behind me. Even with the new moon phase coming these deer were hurrying their way back to the safety of their bed before shooting light. The action slowed down from there as not much was happening besides enjoying my time in the stand on a very crisp late October morning. I sat there day dreaming on what this years Rut and season will have in store for me over the next few weeks. The time of year I look forward to the whole year is banging at the door step. I did not see another deer until just after 8:30 as another group of a doe and her two fawns make their way from my left . These deer took a lil’ different path as they crossed directly in front of me at around 20 yards. Having to get to work yet, I waited about another 10 minutes as those deer worked their way over the ridge and out of sight. I got down just before 9 am but still had to contend with the three bedded deer by my stand I got all the way down and about 40 yards from my stand before the deer got up and scurried.

I did not see any rut activity or much for scrapes or rubs by my stand on my way out, but man did I need that. There is just something about a cool crisp Late October morning in the stand that rejuvenates this hunter. This Friday Stacie and I are heading up to North Dakota to hopefully have Stacie experience her first North Dakota Rut activity in the stand and harvest her first Whitetail with her Mathews DXT. However, I got news from my buddy Paul that due to the rain the farmers are harvesting beans right now and have not even started with the corn. :bawlng: To make things worse the South and South East winds predicted do not allow us to hunt our best stands. Oh well, we will just have to make due with the cards we will be dealt. Good luck to everyone out there as this boys schedule gets a lil crazy from here on out to about Thanksgiving. I can not tell you when I will report back, but I will report back with the Good, Bad or Ugly when I get the chance. It is time boys and girls make sure you get your out in the woods and keep tuned in right here @ IN-DEPTH OUTDOORS as the BIG BOYS start to drop. Good luck and may your arrow find it’s mark.

Favorite thing is chasing Monster Bucks with a bow. Fishing eyes and chasing those ringnecks with my buddy Rufus is hard to beat! I fish Mille Lacs,Pool 2& Minnewawa the most. I run a Red Ranger 620 with Mercury's, Full Bio ›

  1. Good metro report Lip! You gotta love those morning hunts before work. You’re right – the best is right around the corner! Good luck to you and Stacie this weekend and I look forward to your next report.

  2. Way to slip by the doe and fawn Rob, I think things are starting to go here too. This saturday will tell whats going on around here and the next three weeks ought to be prime for the bucks to be scrapeing and looking hard.

  3. Keep the good reports coming! I am living vicariously through you guys right now cause school is keeping me out of the woods…until Saturday. Wish it was gonna be colder

  4. Just to help you along Jake, here is a short video clip from the other morning to let you feel an encounter I had from the stand. I’m having trouble combining a few clips together and posting on YouTube. So here is something to tide you over.
