After a frustrating opening week with two hunters both missing easy shots at Bruins I was glad to see my good friend Paul (Cedar Paul) Johnson draw a tag and book a 3rd season hunt.Paul hunted with me last year and came within a couple seconds of bagging his 1st Black Bear after two years in Canada on unsuccessful hunts.
The baits had been getting hit hard and last week one of my hunters had six bear in at a time…but a warm spell had them coming in after dark. I decided to walk in with Paul and have him slip up his tree while I noisely rebaited and left in the truck…
About 45 minutes later as I was cruising back towards home to watch some football a beautifully pelted male came slipping in behind Paul…after some anxious moments…he gave Paul a good 20 yd shot. Paul drew back his 56# PSE X Force and took careful aim…
The 28″ Victory carbon arrow with a deadly 100gr Slick Trick broadhead took the bear behind the rib cage and angled through Liver and Lung. We tracked it for about 500 yards and it died on a trail that my Kawasaki ATV could drive right to. Nothing makes a Guide happier than a successful trip… Now off to the taxidermist and then the meat processor for some great memories of a great hunt!
Congrats to Paul and good job Tom on the set up! The area looks beautiful with the color of the fall leaves. What did you use for bait to bring in this bear?
Ya congradulations to Paul, way to go Tom. Want to trade a whitetail hunt for a bear hunt Tom lol, I could go for that.
Congrats to Paul
Man those are some great looking pics. Great job putting him on one Tom!
Bakery and Fruit… works for me too!
We can arrange that Dan…
