After letting a smaller spike buck walk past me last Saturday, the 2007 gun season came to an end at 11am this morning!!! I found something a bit larger to shoot from the stand today. The area I hunt is on some county land west of Dads Corner in Aitkin Co. It has been a little quiet around these parts for deer seen and shots fired. Our group of hunters have shot two does and two bucks so far. Laurie Westerlund mentioned that it has been slow for deer registered also. Laurie was making note of the weight of my buck as she weighed it for " Norms Big Buck Contest" at Westerlunds Cenex in Malmo, Mn. Oh by the way the 8 pointer that I shot this am weighed in at 135lbs. A little under the first place buck of 220lbs!!!
I had plans to sit in my stand till 11am today. At just shortly before 11 I started to pack up my gear. As I was about to start my way down the ladder….I heard a noise straight ahead of me. It was a deer moving slowly along the edge of the swamp where my stand is situated. It wasn’t far in the distance maybe 30 yards!!! I made a killing shot as the buck was hopping over a wind fall.
The time was 11am….as is the custom whenever Hook and I would shoot a buck we would make note of the time, as we always had a side bet for first buck shot. So as I looked down at my watch I thought of my best friend Tim. Tim is unable to get out hunting these days but his presence was there with me as always…….
