Wisconsin Dells, Wi. walleye report

The Wisconsin Dells is located on the wisconsin river in south central wisconsin. Its down river from Castle rock lake which is also on the wisconsin river. Also located north of Lake Wisconsin on the river as well. It is also about an hour drive north of Madison. There is a dam in town which generates power for the area.
Roger and I hit the river about 8:30 on the March 8th with cold temps for the morning and a little more current and higher water than ussually. All the gates were open at the dam today. Which means you need to fish the ledges and eddies to find some fish hiding out of the current. We tried a deeper strech with some slack water edges and rock humps. We were jigging and using lindy rigs also on the drift. The jigs we were using were hair jigs and jigs with ringworms. The lindy rigs we used had floaters or plain hooks of various colors. Depth was critacal for finding the active fish for the day.

I got back to the river again on the 14th of March with my youngest son Jason and a good freind of ours Micheal. One thing that was different today was all the gates at the dam were closed. We always have a good time fishing together and ussually we have some good luck. The morning started out 18 degrees with light winds forecast for the day and sun also. The trolling motor was froze up the first 2 drifts we made. So not much boat control other than to use the big motor to position for the drift. We were using ring worms , hairjigs and jigs with gulp of different colors and the sizes were 1/4 to 3/8th once for the jigs. Micheal was pitching jigs to the shallows and produced 3 shorts , which was a good sign the fish were feeding early up in the shallows. Jason and I were verticle jigging in the deeper water about 20 feet of water. Not much was going on till about 11 am for us and but it turned into a pretty good bite till we left at 4 pm. Jason pulled in the first slot fish of the day on a black 3/8th once jig tipped with a dark purple gulp worm.

As the day went on the fish were moving out of the shallows and into deeper water and got a lot more aggressive the rest of the afternoon. It turned into a good vertical jigging bite which seemed to be critical for catching more fish. The hair jigs and plastics were both doing well for getting them to hit. I switch over to a plain red jig and a minnow and pulled in a couple of fish as well. Jason stuck it out with the gulp and had a great day with that as well and Micheal and the hairjigs were doing well also.

For the day we ended up with 6 fish for the frying pan and 4 fish that were up in the slot from 21 up 26 inches. We also threw back several short fish as well. On this part of the Wisconsin river there is a slot size limit of 20 inch to 28 inch fish have to be released. Over all it turned out to be a great day fishing with Micheal and Jason.
