Pool 4 Mississippi River Walleye Report

I had the privilege to get on the water Saturday with a great bunch of fisherman.

Brad Laabs, Leroy Howard from Detroit Lakes Mn. and Randy Stevens from Rochester.

We launched Brads Rig at 7:30 am and the adventure was underway.

The vote was taken and the bets were made. So we headed down river to pitch shore line sand flats and riprap.

The up north boys strike first Bam. Leroy carp..next thing Bam up north boys again Brad carp. About an hour passes and another vote is taken. We decided to go north young man go north.

So we head to Haycreek.

It is a beautiful day cloudy skies. With a nice chop coming up the river.

We set up at Haycreek and Bam,,,Randy "HotHands" Stevens takes our money on the first keeper fish its a 16 incher.

We pick up another couple fish on this drift..and start to figure things out for the day.

The bite is tough but I think we can scratch out a limit or two o fish to take home we all want some eaters.

The bite is plastics and vertical…I love it.

Leroy Howard strikes with the biggest fish of the day.

But hah it is the wrong species for the money bet.

But it is a really nice sturgeon.

We continue to do our vertical thing the best baits are Super Doos, Assassins, and Livin eyes..

Key to being bit you have to stay vertical and you have to stay motionless. With a drop lift every three to four minutes. Holding still that long drives me crazy.

Good thing for pranks on your fishing partners.

We ended up the day with 17 fish to take home from 14 to 20 inches.

We were shy of our limit of 24 but we gave it a great try.

It was a great day on the water and the company was A-one.

Thanks guys..

  1. The Freeze your Butt Tourney was held on Saturday.
We went up and watched the weigh in.
They had a great turnout and Steve Vick had the resort hoppin and running in smooth order.
Here is a couple of my on the water shots.

  2. Nice report Vandy! . Good to see a little friendly competition going on between friends. Nice to see you got Mr. Stevens out of work for the day so he could play. So who was the big money winner by days end?

Did the 4 of you have a certain depth that was more productive for the day? Any magical colors, or did you get fish on several for the day?

I was going to head out today but the winds kept be shore bound .

  3. Thanks Dustin,

Missed not seeing you out there this weekend.

Wow you must be going through Withdrawl.

Oh yea us southerns fleeced the up north guys out of their money.

Our best depths were 22 to 32 feet and the fish held on all the backside drops.

    Color Gold….

    Assassin’s big fish bait.

    Super Doos produced fish

Livin eyes best bait of the day for numbers.

But we had a rough day I’d have to say we fought to catch 30 fish between us with only 17 keepers.

See ya on the water Big guy.

    Later Vandy..

  4. tell the truth Vandy….one of the north guys beat one of the south guys for #’s…..the money was only on 1st and biggest. You were lucky to slide in with that nice 20 incher.

  5. Hey! I thought the weigh-in snowball fight was the highlight of the day!… lol It was great to see all you “up nort’ers” again and look forward to some extended chat time in the future.

It was a great day on the water the pranks were non stop from the time we woke up.
It will be good to get together again in the near future.
Hopefully I’ll have my boat back on the water in the next couple weeks.
