Mississippi River High Water Levels

With the unusual high river levels there have been many new areas to fish. Gremore for one has been phenomenal this year. Gills have been averaging 7 to 8in. And with some of the fronts that come thru can make “Catching” the norm over just fishing !!!

The perch population has been on the rebound here on pool 10 as well as other pools. Fish from 12 to 14″ are becoming more regular. Although I still feel the need to release these beautiful specimens, keeping a few for the dinner table can be irresistible for most. But please remember to practice selective harvest so those trophy perch will be there to make us smile for years and years to come.

Lil Cecil’s, Purist’s, Mini Mert’s and diamond jigs have been the most productive baits for me the past few outings. No bait…. tipping the jigs with plastics has put some real good fish on the ice for me. I may not catch as many as the jig and bait setup, but I think the fish have been bigger.

One of the best bites I had in one of the last outings it was a real nice snow day…

It was easy to stand out in the elements with the Snow Suit. I have never regretted the purchase of this piece of equipment !!

Remember all, Please Practice Selective Harvest !!

See you on the ice !!

  1. Thanks for the report Dave and the selective harvest suggestion. A popular spot down river from you has been getting massacred by people fishing on an empty stomach.

  2. Nice fish Dave and that’s a big ole on the selective harvest reminder. Especially on the rebounding perch population.
