Brown Trout Milwaukee Harbor

Hey Guys hope everyone is having a great holiday season. Fishing has been great here in the harbor the past month for a very consistent brown trout and steelhead bite. Caught several big browns over 20 lbs with the biggest at 25 lbs, which was released.

Ice is starting to form in many spots and it looks like by this weekend most area’s will have safe ice.

best baits have been trolling flicker shads, and spoons on lead core and boards, also jigging 4 inch white gulp minnows and spawn under floats and on the bottom has been effective. before the harbors frooze we also did well throwing cranks and jerk baits for these big trout.

Best of luck to all and have a great holiday!

  1. Thanks guys it’s fun but maaaaan it’s cold fishing out of the boat in mid winter! I need a road trip myself to somewhere warm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Very cold ecspecially in the boat where your limited with mobility but the fishing can be so good it’s hard to pass up consistent action of 30-50 trout a trip on spinning tackle. It seems sometimes the colder it is the better the bite is….. Thanks and good fishing!

  3. those are some very respectable fish, congrats! what are the length’s your seeing on those browns? the girths are unreal.

  4. Most are 20-32 inches with an occasional fish in the 33+ inch range. biggest trout I’ve caught was 40 1/2 inches and weighed 34.8 lbs in 2001. this year we had a few in the mid 20 lb range but most are 4-15 lbs consistently.

  5. Awesome. Yeah a 32 inch brown is a TANK, and i cant imagine a 40 incher lol. I fish Lake Superior a ton, and we see quite a few browns in the 22 to 29 inch range with one every now and then pushing 31 or 32. But then again Lake Superior is no where near what Michigan is. The girth is what gets me, our Superior fish look like models compared to yours.

  7. Is the McKinley launch still open? If so anybody care to hypothesize if it will still be open around Christmas?

  8. Great report Eric! Looks like some happy clients to me. Those are some great photos of what the best trout fishery in the world has to offer! Cant wait to start pounding em through the ice!

If McKinley’s not open (unlikely it will be with these temps)then the National Ave launch might be.

  10. Went down to National tonight and the launch was covered in ice and the river was starting to ice up. Be careful if you give it a try! This is one of 10 we landed last Friday.

  11. Only 1 launch open and the ice is getting bad be careful if your not familiar with the launch and ice out there. I do not like having to go throug ice with my boat but it’s part of the job. However the ice fishing bite is solid now in other area’s with some solid fish threw the ice.

  12. what type of Browns are they? I cant imagine a pure strain German Brown getting that big…
You are really getting my itch to come fish…

Those are plus sized models. Great fish Eric!!

  14. Fished on Wednesday with my boys and a couple of friends. We managed 2 Browns and a nice Rainbow while losing two after setting the hook. All came on tip ups. Fished almost all day. Pretty slow bite overall.

Had to break some ice to get the boat out, but was well worth the effort. Great day on the water!

Man… do those fish eat well! What a fattie.

Thanks for sharing the pic. We’re really just getting started with the ice season and I’m already feeling twinges of missing my boat.
