Blue Collar Pannies

Had plans to get on the water with my father tonight after work. Being under the gun to get out before sundown was going to be a tough goal. We made it to the access with a sliver of light left in the west. Went out to the spot I found on the map that looked to be productive. I had never fished the lake before tonight but knowing where the weedline ended helped a lot. Seeing other guys fishing a similar weedline helped boost the confidence. Having our own piece of virgin ice. I fired up the solo and ripped open 5 areas to investigate. Dad followed with an LX 5 and all 5 spots showed fish, and showed them hanging a few feet off the bottom.

We each grabbed a rod and went to figuring out quickly which spot we would set the otter up on for the night. I popped three crappies right away and wanting to know the weight of them for an upcoming tournament in a month or so, they weighed in at 1.9, 1.8 and 1.9! Sweet! So we grabbed the otter, fired up the heater and sat together catching crappies and gills for the next few hours.

We working an outside weedline in about 16 feet of water and a majority of our fish were hanging off bottom about 3-4 feet. The zoom feature on the LX 5 really worked well, helping us seperate the fish and individually picking out fish to target.

I was working a #12 glow fatboy with a glow red micro nuggie. While my dad was next to me with a glow red jalapeno and a pink nuggie. We really had to fineese these fish. Just barely getting that tail to dance was all they wanted and if you over did, you would watch the fish scatter. There is nothing better than feeling that Tap of a crappie and putting the quiverstick to em!

So when we got home, I took to cleaning fish, well dad got the marcums back on the chargers, unloaded the house and wheeler. He grabbed a few nice fillets out, heated up some oil and we had some nice sturdiwheat crappies and tots for dinner! Nice way to finish the night on a good note with my father. We certainly do not get enough chances to fish together, so these nights where everything works is a real treat. I am still trying to figure out who had a more enjoyable time tonight.

  1. Ya know Chris?

I was reading and came to the part about the oil and the little voice in my head said “It’s 11:15 pm and fried fish sounds pretty good.”

    Then I saw your photo.

    I need a panfish fix!

  2. Too many tots and not enough fish. Really it looks good Chris. You guys are getting me fired up to make a road trip.

  5. Chris:

That’s about as good as it gets right there. Nothing quite like going straight from ice-to-pan, and the fishing sounded good to boot. Thanks for the great report Chris!
