Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 11-03-10

I have only been back to the big river once since my last report. Since I last wrote, the water has risen almost 5′. Even with the on going high water, the clarity is good and the debris is minimal right now .

I shared my boat with good friend Josh Johnholtz. Our day started by applying the same system I was implementing last time I fished. Pitching jigs, then went to trolling once the shallow water bite slowed. We saw a very good bite right away in the morning casting plastics . Firecracker k-grubs and firecracker/chartreuse tail ring worms took top honors for fish producers on this day. We were able to boat close to a three man limit of legal walleye in just under two hours with four really good eyes making it to the net. Our two biggest fish of the day were right at the 10lb mark . One was caught on a firecracker/chartreuse tail ring worm, the other on a 5″ firecracker K-grub. Both of the big eyes Josh is holding were caught on a 5″ firecracker K-grub as well.

Once the shallow water bite slowed we turned our attention to the deeper water in the area we were targeting with poor results. Those fish must have been full from their morning feeding binge because vertical jigging the deeper water was not getting them to excited ! Then it was off to troll.

We spent the rest of our day pulling Dubuque rigs and 3-waying plastic’s with plenty of action to keep us busy. Most of the fish caught rigging were in the 14″-16 1/2″‘ class. These fish were predominantly sauger. We did keep busy boating 2-3 smaller fish to every eater sauger we put in the boat. A friend of mine was pulling 3-ways and cranks in the same area we were rigging plastics with some better sauger and walleye in the18″-20″ range. I never took the chance to convert to the stick baits, just not enough time in the day sometimes

Even though I have only had the chance to get on the water once since October 24th, the Walleye and sauger fishing has remained very good from the reports I have received from others making out.

I’ll see you on the river!

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.
