High Water Pool 2 Walleyes.

What a fantastic weekend of fall walleye fishing on Pool 2. It had been a few weeks since my last trip out and a lot had changed. Water levels had come up over 10′ and are now dropping back down almost as fast as they had risen. Jon Jordan and I hit the water about 9am on Saturday kinda wondering what the current conditions where going to bring us. We spent the morning jumping around a few spots and doing some sight seeing of areas that we usually can not get into. Closer to noon we found a few fish trolling a very fast current seem but this still wasn’t the plan I wanted to stick to that day. I wanted to take advantage of the high water and get back to some areas that we can not usually get into. As it turned out this was the right move and again after bouncing around a few spots we had finely found the fish we where looking for like this nice 27"er Jon is holding.

Most of our fish this weekend came off a nice current break located in the back waters. We started out targeting a pool of slack water near it with jigs with not much to show for it. Moving out a little farther and throwing crank-baits to the fastest moving water on this break was the ticket. We where a little amazed the fish where holding in this fast of water. I would guess 4 to 5mph and the water was moving fast enough that we could even dead stick crank baits if we wanted to. Hooking into a fish in this current was like hooking into a ice cream bucket.

Saturday we caught a nice mix of mid sized and large walleyes with many in the 24 to 26" range. We had one nice double that hooked up while trolling that we some how got on Video. Those fish went 23" and 25"s. Jon big fish of the day was a little over 27"s and was also caught trolling flicker shads. Jon had thought at first he snagged a log drifting down river. Then after a few head shakes that maybe it was a nice flathead. Very nice fish Jon.

Sunday I would have to say the big fish really came out to play. We spent most of Sunday just anchoring and casting crank baits. Started out where we had left off on Saturday targeting the fastest part of the current break. After getting a few nice walleyes there We decide to reposition the boat a little and target another little rock hump of this area that had produce just a few fish the day before. Glad we did as the big gals had really moved up on this spot. In the next hour we caught around a half dozen more walleyes running from 23"s to just over 28"s with the 2 largest going 27 and 28"s. You know you are having fun when asked if its a nice one and your reply is "just another big one". From the look on Jons face in this photo I think he is having a good time.

So do the walleyes feed in high river water? I would say yes and they seem to feed very well. A good share of the fish we caught this weekend where sporting some nice bellies. Location is key and right now getting of the main channel is almost a must. Locate the bait fish that have been pushed around by the high water and most likely there will be bigger fish around waiting to feed on them. If you do get out in this higher water period take some extra precautions getting around. I would not advise running around on plain after dark and during the day while running keep a eye out sticks and logs floating around.

Good luck to you guys that are getting out. Thanks for a great weekend of fishing Jon.

  1. For the last week or better the main public accesses that we use have been closed due to high water. Calling around to the local marinas we found Willy’s Hidden Harbor just south of Lions Levee has been open. They have a great launch on the back side of there harbor with no current on it. Nice parking area and even video security of there parking lot. $10 to launch and you get a free beverage ticket with the launch pass. Very nice set up they have.
