Fall smallies in summer-like weather!

With this summer-like weather, my good friend, Aaron, and I got all of our work completed earlier than we expected, because we really had fishing on the brain! Within seconds the Beavertail duck blind was off the boat and it was time to convert it back to fishing. We did some late night trolling hoping to find some active walleyes, and that left a bad taste in our mouths. We elected to switch things up and find another species. It turned out to be smallmouths!

These fish were all over, from the shallows to the deeper waters. Spinnerbaits and buzzbaits produced primarily pike, and these bass didn’t want anything of that nature. One thing that we really noticed was the fish really preferred jigs, and the bite was on! Jigworms, texas rigged, jig n pigs, anything of this nature and the fight was on!

Most often, these fish were hanging close to cover when we found them in the shallows, and it was a battle with whatever hung along the shoreline. Lots of snags, busted lines and retrievals.

We also managed to pull some dandys from the weeds with some good old jig N pigs. The big fish preferred the big jigs I threw at them, and several in the 17-20″ range were boated and released for another day.

This weather is very welcome after a very wet summer, and I’m glad at least one bite is still going strong! The walleyes though….can’t crack that one. Don’t be afraid to switch things up and find other active fish.
