Fall metro muskies

Well all you muskie nuts out there, the fall muskie season is officially under way. With the clearing of the water, recent drops in water temps and the shortening of day light, these crazy fish have put on the feed bags – big time. This past week’s fish have been located any where from 3 to 20fow; with shallow fish being easier to find and catch, but running smaller on average than the deeper fish.

With water temps dropping into the low to mid 60s the fish have shifted from their summer open water haunts to their fall feeding grounds. The edges of breaks, and tight to steep green weed lines are holding more bait and more active muskies. Fish have come on a varity of baits ranging from R U KIDDING me rubber, Phantoms, Top Raiders, Cow Girls and Intimidators. Feeding windows have been short, but if you’re in the right area multiple fish will hit the bottom of the net.

Fishing under an overcast sky this past week has been better than the bright blue bird days but that doesn’t mean that time is wasted with a sunny day; without clouds to block the sun, I’ve had to fish fast to locate fish. Once the weather or light conditions change, I go back to those fish found earlier – which, as you can tell, has paid off big time.

If you’re a serious muskie hunter, now is the best time to catch that giant of your dreams. So get out on the lake, have your net and release tools ready, and hang on – because from now until December 1 it’s going to be a wild ride!

  1. Wow! Great fish, and great report. You mentioned overcast days, and from all of the pictures it looks like the weather had a good part to play in when you were targeting them. Without spilling the beans too badly, were these feeding times consistent from day to day, week to week?

  2. Hey Joel thanks and to answer your question feeding times have been fairly consistant but weather has been the biggest factor. What I’ve seen in the past week is that if we have some sort of solar/lunar event plus wind or weather that’s when fish have been most active.

  3. None of the fish are the same, I was just joking. I know who Tim is, all I can say is the man puts in his time chasing these fish and is quite good at catching them. Congrats on the PB. Sorry I Forgot to add the after I posted last night!! Why do musky people get so defensive all the time? Lighten up Folks!!
