Metro Muskies

Well the summer bite is heating up boys and girls. With the arrival of stable weather this week the muskies have started to show up BIG time and they’re hungry! Fish have been chasing down bucktails in the middle of the day like Big Mama Whale tails, cow girls and even a few on spinner baits. When evening comes working the key spots on structure with slower moving baits has paid off big time.

Wind has been one of the biggest factors in finding and catching fish. This is where thinking like a fish (or trying to) has paid off. If I could visualize how the wind would position baitfish on structure, that’s when the Beckman got wet! Try to think of it as fishing walleyes on a wingdam – wind has the same effect as current and positions fish in much the same way.

If I located a fish that would’nt eat, all I had to do was keep going back to it. Sometimes it would eat a hour or 2 later; one fish did’nt eat until 4 days later. These are big, smart fish and being on pressured waters calls for patience and persistence.

Lastly, I’d like to remind everyone that with higher summer water temps, a quick battle and short photo session is best for fish and fisherman alike. I know that one of my 51”fish was already caught by another angler this year and without good catch & release practices this would’nt have been possible. So until next time keep those hooks sharp and your hook cutters ready.

  1. Sweet report Tim!! Nice detail with relating boat to where the “bait” may be located!!

Look forward to more muskie phones this summer/fall!

  2. Pressured waters, 51″s and bloody hands……..my kind of report Tim.

Stay on em and hopefully I’ll see you guys in a month

  3. Heck of a start to the season Tim!! The wind comment makes a lot of sense to me. The last 2 times I have been out have been almost dead calm and I had absolutely zero action.
