Trolling on Lake Petenwell , Wi.

The last couple of weeks on Petenwell have been great for walleye fishing and getting our share of other fish as well. We started out on the lake at 6 am. and starting to troll with some fast action right away. We were running the boat at the old river channels and criss crossing the deep to shallow water. The channel was about 30 feet and the upper edges were about 12 to 15 feet on the upper flats.

The baits of choice were number 7 shad raps , flicker shads and spoons . We were running the raps 60 feet back and the spoons 100 feet back. The hot colors were firetiger and another good color was the purple shad rap as well. For the spoons the fire tiger was the best color for the day. The speed was 1.82 all the way up 2.62 with good success when you changed the speeds of the baits to get the sudden rise and fall of the baits.

The last 2 trips we have some great weather and the fishing was best from day lite till noon when things slowed down the mid day bite. We also got some whitebass, cats, northerns and some dandy crappies as well trolling.

  1. nice report Jeff. I have never fished Petenwell or Castle Rock, but now that I live near Portage, I plan to give them a shot. Have heard lots of good things about them.

  2. I have not made it over to puck yet either. Might be the first spot I hit after my wrist heals up. So much new water to try, and so little time.
