Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 6-24-10

Since my last report, about a month ago, the walleye fishing on the Mississippi River has been much like the weather, good one day, not so good the next! On trips over the last month I have seen days with 50 legal walleye then only 5-10 good walleye the very next day Fish being fish I guess! Even on the days I have put low numbers of fish in the boat the quality has been very good. The bigger walleye have been happy to make a showing on most days even if the numbers of walleye caught are on the low side for this time of year.

Several presentations have boated fish for me over the past 4 weeks. 3-way rigging bait, casting jigs/bait, trolling cranks and casting cranks have all done some damage when in the right place at the right time. Recently, dragging jigs or casting cranks in areas with slower moving water have been best for my boat. Both leeches and crawlers have worked equally well for me so make sure to have both in the boat. Several crank baits have been good for me as well with Bomber 6A’s and #7 flicker shads taking top honors while casting. Darker colors in the craw patterns have been best for me. More important than color has been making sure you have a finely tuned crank bait tied on. Seems every year it gets harder to keep baits running like a finely tuned machine! That or I have become much more selective on how I want my cranks to run in the last couple of years .

The depth of water to target has been solely based on areas we are targeting. I have put good fish in the boat anywhere from 1′ to 22′ of water. The water is on the high side right now. Walleye can be caught targeting typical higher water current seams and eddies that are visible to the naked eye. Finding those not so obvious ones while 3-waying bait in the deeper water is a good bet as well.

Even with the water and flow levels on the high side, water clarity has been decent, even with all the rain. The water’s quite stained and normal summer time patterns of 9am-3pm time frames have seen the best bite for my boat.

Even though the Walleye bite has been very day to day there’s a 100% chance that you won’t catch um if you are not out there trying!

Get out and get fishing! I’ll see you on the water!

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

  1. Steve Sherwood was able to spend two days in my boat in the past couple of weeks We had outstanding days both times we hit the water . His friend Bill was able to join in on the fun one of those days. It was good fish with the both of you again ! I look forward to the next time we hit the water .

It’s nice when fish make the guide look good!

  2. I was able to spend time in the boat with my dad as well over the past few weeks. We had a couple of good days and a few not so good . Dad is pictured here with the bigger walleye we boated during our time together on the river in the past couple of weeks. I did catch some of these walleye but I am much handier with the camera than dad . Besides, he looks better on film than I do

  3. Good friend Josh Johnholtz and I spent some time in the boat the other day. The bite was slow for us but Josh put a couple of good eyes in the boat anyway. One casting cranks and the other was fooled in to eating a draggin jig

  4. Very nice looking fish Dustin. Its the same up here to. There is nothing biting if you don’t go fishing.

  5. I see how it is! When you say fishing is so so that translates to Big BIGGER!

You always amaze me by the number and consistency of putting a big walleye in the hands of your clients.

    See you this weekend!

  6. Those are some nice fish! On the second post, with the pictures of your Dad, its amazing how different the girth is on those fish. That fish in the 3rd picture is super skinny and the fish in the 2nd is thick.

  7. Hey Dustin! Nice to see you Wednesday. The kids and I ended up doing some swimming on Presbyterian and then the weather made us leave. I trolled as long as the kids could stand it and got zeroed. Oh well, good to get out on 4 again!

  8. Way to put the hurt on em, Dustin! Beauties like usual.I can see I need to get over there at least one more time this year. I’ll be in touch.

  9. Beautiful fish! It’s funny in looking at the pics, it seems like they’re almost from different days with clients having short sleeves on for one second, and flannels the next. Testament to the funky wet weather we’ve been having. In my mind, that’s what makes all these big fish more impressive. Unstable weather is tough for anyone, congrats on the great work out there!

  10. The big river is really running hard right now with the heavy rains we received the last couple of days. Debris is abundantly present so be careful while running the river. The water was very muddy around any of the tributaries dumping in to the main river. In a couple of days I think it will clear up but for the time being look for cleaner water to get bit.

I fished with Mom and Dad on Sunday. The bite was on the slow side for numbers but the quality made up for it Mom had the hot stick this day. Our best 4 walleye went 27″ 27 1/2″ 29″ and 30″. Jigs tipped with night crawlers is what worked for us on this day. Never took a walleye on a leech. Nice Walleyes Mom

  11. It is so hard to look at your reports and keep from hooking the boat up and going to visit Dean. Very nice fish all the way around.

  12. Way to go Dustin

Those are some great fish and especially great when you can put the hurt on them like that in the middle of the summer.

I’ve not been on Pepin or the river since Memorial Day and it looks like I am missing out.
