Friday the 13th is supposed to be surrounded by bad luck, but on Friday our luck was far from bad. In fact, we should have gone to the races or the casino, because all the cards fell into the right place. The weather was warm, the wind was down, and the fish were biting.
We concentrated our efforts on the tops of Bena and Center bars from eighteen to twenty-one feet. There is a mixture of large and small perch on top, but Winnie’s larger perch are more aggressive. If you are not getting decent size perch you have to move. Sometimes you don’t have to move far, moving just ten feet can make the difference. We made two short moves to stay on larger, active fish throughout the day.
Over the past few trips I have been using mainly 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz glow devils water around thirty feet deep. On this outing I wanted to concentrate on the shallower water so I downsized to the 1/8 oz and 1/16 oz glow devils. We were tipping the spoons with crappie minnows and we also tried fatheads on deadsticks. The plain hooks got their share of fish once we set up, but most of the big perch came of the spoons. I have been using chartreuse/green glow, chartreuse/orange glow, and firetiger. During a slow bite, one color will usually produce more than the others, but the color didn’t make much of a difference on Friday.
The pictures are of Ed, Mark, and Matt. We had a fun day on the water, and I’m glad I got to share this experience with them. At only six years old Matt did an awesome job of reading the Marcum, setting the hook, and fighting the fish. We all caught fish, but Matt did a majority of the catching. He was sure to let Dad and Grampa know when he caught a keeper.
Now those are some Jumbos!! Nice report bud
Yes nice report. That little boy sure looks happy.
Sorry about the one star rating I was trying to give you a 5-star rating for that report and nice pile of Jumbos
That 1 star is just ‘cuz you were wishing it was you instead.
MIke, I would have loved to have been there pulling up those Jumbo’s. I love that perch fishing. Plus, they make some very good eats.
Unfortuately, I was stuck up on Red catching pound and a half crappies all weekend
A report should be up today.
Great report Adam. Looks like we are in for a fun next couple of months of perchin on Winnie. Did you catch any walleyes or was it mainly a perch bite?
Scott, your right on those tasty perch, there is nothing like a meal or two of those Winnie Magnums.
Time to start bringing out the sunscreen. It’s nice to feel the warmth of the sun as it gets higher in the sky. We didn’t get any eyes, but we weren’t on the water for the morning or evening bite.
