3 Rats on Pool 4

This time of year with the abscence of fabled “bumper boats”,rising water levels mean game on for our end of the pool.Recently, celebrating fathers day as only the Stevens family can 3 generations of river rats took a family day on the water. The youngest Matt, lead the way for numbers and quality for the day.

With changing water conditions, experience is tough to beat recognizing of what is happening where and when.History does tend to repeat itself and the pattern of the day showed itself here as well.Day to day,as conditions change, pitching, dragging, casting cranks, rigging, and or trolling are and can be the presentation of choice, but only the fish really know which is going to be of their preference.

The bite initially, was a casting situation incorporated some cranks and jig & bait.Nice fish were boated, but the bites were becoming scarce so a change was in order.Dragging jigs were next on the list, and the results were almost imediate!

These are the jigs we use for the dragging presentation.Colors are time tested for many years. You really never know which is the hot one for the day so experiment. This also includes your live bait choices, but today,it was dead even between leeches & crawlers. Another inside tip for you is to vary your jig weights.Especially if there are multiple anglers in the boat.1/16 & 1/8th would be the weights of the day with the heaviest jig/shortest amount of line being fished out of the front of the boat and the lightest jig/longest line from the back position. Make adjustments as needed if one weight or color is getting the job done.If you have an interest in learning how to drag jigs, the DVD,Mastering Jig Dragging is a great start. There are also some very good guides on many of the pools that help you out first hand.

The 3 generation rats had a outstanding day on the water and I am reminded of a few years past of some family time on the water as well. Those memories far outshadow any fish ever caught. Good fishing to everyone!

  1. Nice report Dean and congrats to everyone on their fish! Great job mixing it up tactics to maximize your success!

  2. Love it! Nice work to the Steven’s family, and thanks for sharing Dean. Always a nice wrinkle to the story when father/son teams can get on the water, and better yet when we can be a fly on the wall….er…..gunwhale of the boat!

  3. Thanks for the report Dean. Nice looking fish guys. I have been playing around with the dragging jigs a little up here but still havent put a good pattern together with them. What is working with them is being able to slow drag them on the wingdams with out getting hung up. We have also been throw them into some nasty current/timber areas and are still able to get them back out.

    Amazing little jigs.

  4. HEY! I thought Randy was a catfish guide?!

    Nice fish guys!

It’s truely amazing at as popular as that area is, we can be totally alone fishing.

    See you tonight guys!
