Hey everyone. We had such a fantastic trip to Onaman Lake yesterday and with a couple of last minute open cabins, I thought I would post a quick report.
Early in the day, we landed several nice walleye, rig’in jig’in and throwing cranks, but that paled in comparison to the afternoon bite that brought multiple doubles and big smiles. As the wind picked up and the cloud cover moved in, the fishing got silly! At one point, we had to run to shore and hide behind a tree to bait our hooks!
I also employed a valuable lesson learned from Mr. Holst himself. Before I tell you the lesson though, I have to give you a quick background on Onaman Lake.
Onaman is a designated outfitter lake. In other words, you’ll have to go through a designated outfitter in order to fish the lake. It is definitely not a lake where you will find big boats. Oh, and the walk down to the lake is a quick mile and a quarter. If you aren’t up for a little exercise, Onaman is not the lake for you. But, for the hardy fisherman, a gold mine of BIG walleyes waits at the end of the Onaman rainbow.
Back to my lesson learned. As most of the anglers know who are reading this, boat control is an absolutely critical part of any successful walleye outing. Given that we were rigging from one of our brand spank’in new 14ft, Alumacraft boats, keeping the nose into the wind proved to be a little challenging. So what do to? We tied a 40” Drift Control Wave Tamer (drift sock) on to the nose, which proved to be the perfect remedy. With pin point boat control and some very anxious anglers, we proceed to make pass after pass that landed us some down right gorgeous, 24” average walleyes.
