Leech Lake Walleye Report 6-4-10

I was lucky enough to spend my birthday with my family, camping on Leech lake this past weekend. The company was great and so was the fishing! It was truly a great trip. As always, when the family comes along you don’t get to fish as much as one would like, but the time we did spend on the water was very productive.

Saturday morning we went out and it took us an hour or so to graph fish, but they were all over the flats by goose island in 8-10FOW. We pulled 5 foot long spinner rigs with gold blades tipped with leeches at about 1 mph. We tried crawlers but after leeches went 8-1 we switched to Leeches. For a weight we used the 3/4oz Lindy No Snag style sinkers. They kept us from getting hung up and allowed our baits to be presented just off bottom. We fished for a couple hours boating numerous fish in the 19″-26″ range. We ended up with a 27″, 28″ and our limits of eaters (15-17.5″). After our fish fry we had a pretty decent cold front and thunderstorms move through.

We hit the water about 7:30 Sunday morning. We figured the storm might have pushed our fish deep, but decided to check the shallow area we fished the day before. After a quick couple passes without marking a fish we knew we’d have to look deep. We quickly reeled up our lines and started searching the windy side of these flats with the Lowrance. We drove around for about a half hour before we found what we were after, a huge school of fish pushed out just off the break in 15 FOW.

I thought maybe they’d be in a negative mood and we’d have to slow our presentation but we decided to try the same spinner presentation we used the day before. It didn’t take but 50′ into our first pass and it was fish on, a nice 25″ golden walleye. Over the next two hours, we put about 15 very healthy 20″-26.5″ fish in the boat. The big fish for the morning was a fat 26.5″ along with another bunch of 16.5″-17.5″ eaters. Before we new it, it was 10:30 and our morning fishing time was up and the ladies were expecting us back at camp. With the locator full of active fish we reeled up our lines and headed in. What a great morning on the water!

I’ve been guiding on MilleLacs quite a bit and it’s no secret the bite is incredible out there, so I questioned how the fishing on Leech was going to stack up. All I can say is the fishing on Leech and MilleLacs right now is phenomenal. I really don’t think you could go wrong with either lake for your upcoming summer vacation. Summer is here so get outdoors and enjoy those beautiful Minnesota lakes!

I bought my first boat when I was 13 and I've spent about every day since on the water or ice. I do most of my guiding on MilleLacs and in the Alexandria Lakes area.
