MilleLacs Lake – Walleye Report

Over the last week I’ve covered a lot of water on the big lake and the number of fish in MilleLacs right now is staggering. Checkout the graph pics. Whether you’re fishing rocks, gravel or the mud, there are walleye stacked like this all over the lake.

We caught fish all day long: morning, afternoon and evening. In the mornings we bobber fished deep rock and gravel in about 24’ and easily put our limits in the boat by noon. In the afternoons we opted to fish the mud for some larger fish and in the evenings we set up in 10’-14’ with our lighted Splash Brights!

When we had lines in the water, we almost always had fish coming through on the graph. I can’t stress the importance of reading fish while you’re fishing. The fish are not everywhere so if you’re making 500yd drifts all day, like I see so many people do, you are probably only on fish 5% of the time or less. If you want to catch more fish use your electronics and hold yourself on the fish and you will increase your catch tenfold.

From looking at my Lowrance I noticed many fish would come up to our baits and turn right back around. That’s why sitting on the fish and giving them many chances to take the bait was so key to our success. If you don’t have the ability to control your boat or have a decent graph the night bite would be your best bet. Set up on some shallow rocks in 10-14FOW and the fish will come to you. From 9:00-10:00pm is usually the best bite. It hasn’t been uncommon to catch your limit in this very short time period.

We are just at the start of the prime bite for the year, so if you’ve always wanted to experience what MilleLacs lake has to offer, now is the time!

I bought my first boat when I was 13 and I've spent about every day since on the water or ice. I do most of my guiding on MilleLacs and in the Alexandria Lakes area.

  1. Atta boy Joe! Thanks for the call on Sun and I wish I would have been able to join you. Great advice about boat control and staying on the active feeding fish. Let’s plan a day on the water!

  2. Some people dream of big bucks, nice cars, and big houses, but screen shots like that is what I have dreams about. On Monday we ran into a couple schools of fish like those in the pictures and both times it resulted in a double.
