Catfishing the Mississippi~Whole Lot of Lovin’!

Never met the guy in person, but through IdoFishing I’ve emailed and pm’ed him hundreds of times since last winter.

Jakob Hals, the guy that designed www.BrianKsWorld.com and I finally met in person this last Saturday to get some fishing and BSing in.

I quickly found out that it was true what I suspected…he can keep up with me on the BS front. LOL!

Jakob brought a long his friend Alex. Between the three of use I’m not really sure why the boat was still floating!

It was claimed that the reason Alex’s fish was smaller was because Jakob rubbed the famous Beek’s Yellow Jacket.

I’m not sure that was the case but poor Alex couldn’t even net a large bullhead out of my bait tank. Alex was the only fella I’ve ever taken out that failed at catching bait out to the tank. We’ll work on that Alex!

It was one wise crack after another that made the night very enjoyable. A few fish didn’t hurt either.

We started out early fishing for channel cats using the Brand X stink bait from Everts. We set up three rods one with Sonny’s, one with Brand X Rotten Shad flavor and one with Brand X Chicken Liver. We interchanged Brand X Blood flavor to change thing up once in a while.

With the warmer water temps the Sonny’s and the Rotten Shad stayed on the hooks better, but they all caught fish.

I don’t recall if it was our first fish or not, but very soon after we were set up our first double SLAM bent the rods over.

Here’s the nitty gritty on the flat fishing.

We used a combination of bullheads and 9 inch suckers for bait. There didn’t seem to be a prefered bait as they both were hit and hit hard.

We were using the standard rigging set up, 80 pound Courtland Master Braid, 4 oz no-roll sinkers, 110 pound test swivels, 6 to 10 inch Master Braid leaders attached to the 10/0 Gamakatzu hooks.

Now Dean had me try something a little different starting last year. I’ve been placing a "rattle glow" bead just above the hook on ONE of my rigs. When the baitfish wiggles, the bead rattles.

I’m not going to say this is the magic bullet, but this night like so many others, the flats picked up on the rig with the rattle bead. It might be worth giving it a try and reporting back on how they work for you.

With all the kissing of the cats in our boat Saturday, it certainly did give a new meaning to "How Did It Taste!"

  1. Two good guys to have in the boat…when Jakob said to rub my yellow Float Tec PFD for good luck, I darn near fell off my chair.

Good guys and they know their fishing!

I just love how you go with the name Ryan and I made up for you!! BEEKS!!

Unreal night with some amazing company. Thanks for all the good laughs – it may have got a little out of hand after the “noodling” conversation LOL.

Brian sure does know his stuff – not only is he great at just basic conversation, he teaches fishing and boating techniques throughout the night. The tips he gave were worth the trip in itself, add in some fish and it made for an amazing night. If you haven’t yet fished with beeks I promise you it is something not to miss.

I look forward to fishing with you soon BEEKS – see you in October (hopefully before then)!

  3. Nice lookin’ fiiiiiiish! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I had no idea Alex had never caught a flathead before? That guy got me started fishing for cats after high school so that really surprises me! Either way nice fish guys!

X2 – Alex also got me into cats! I’m very happy I was able to turn him onto flats – think we may have turned another walleye guy over to the darkside

  5. A rattel of some kind above the hook, Im going to give that a try Briank, It should work on channels too, would a small piece of glowstick maybe work too? who knows,,,thanks for the hint.

  6. Although the rattle balls glow in the dark, I’m thinking it’s more of the rattle than the sight of a glow ball or stick. But it’s always worth a try!

Hope you can find someone to come along with you in Oct. Jakob.

  7. Great report BK! Congrats on your kitties! Fishing cats with BK is never considered a “quiet night”.

Btw- Kissing a cat is not mandatory, but it does increase your love life.

I will attest to that! Though I was only hoping it would help with my “Master-Baiting” skills…. Unbelievable Beeks Unbelievable…

  9. Who’s the guy playing the banjo in the background!
Good report, but kissing catfish-well, that is just wrong.
