Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 5-20-10

The walleye bite on the big river has been good for the better than average size fish on the last couple of outings. Dragging orange or blue jigs in the1/16oz or 1/8oz size tipped with crawlers or leeches down river has produced well for my boat. With the increase of water volume we received last week finding areas with reduced flow is crucial if you are going to drag jigs right now. If you are going to target those small deep water current breaks 3-way rigging bait is a good bet right now until the water levels recede.

I have only trolled crank baits once on the last three trips with poor results in the same areas I have been dragging jigs. The fish I have been catching are not that aggressive. The bites have been very subtle, detecting them feels a lot like you are about to get hung up on the bottom but it’s not. Dropping the rod tip back and slowly pulling forward will reveal whether or not its bottom or a walleye just hanging on to your bait.

The water clarity on the river right now has been surprisingly good with about 1′ of water visibility in all the areas I have fished. With the cooler weather we have had, up until now, a lot of the big cruisers have been docked keeping the rivers water clarity in good condition.

It looks like the warm weather is here to stay for a while. Get out and get fishing!

I’ll see you on the river !

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

  1. Kirk Dahl and his son Jefferson shared a half day trip with me. Kirk and Jefferson were both fortunate enough to catch their new personal best walleyes on this half day trip . Kirk is pictured above in the report and Jefferson is pictured here in this post. The both of them are pictured again with a couple more nice eyes we boated on our trip.

The fishing was pretty decent for us on this half day trip so I went back out by myself and fished a few more hours alone. I am pictured here with my 5 best walleye boated on the second half of the day. I really wish Kirk and Jefferson could have stuck around

  2. Great report Dustin! 1′ of visibility….we have about 4′ down here.

Wanna come down and dip some Willowcats with me?

  3. Dustin:

Great report, glad to see you’re doing well out there! Interesting to hear that some of those fish aren’t being caught on leadcore/cranks and that slowing down a bit might help.
