The action on the Mississippi River has just been the hottest it has ever been. With every cast we have been landing 10 and 12lb walleyes. We are catching so many of them we are just not even netting them anymore but just lifting them over the side of the boat.
Well as you can see I am dreaming again. I am just waiting for o’man winter to just leave and get out of town. I have still been in the boat everyday, but most of my time in my boat, has been while my boat is sitting in the garage, while dreaming up fairy tales like the one up above. Maybe one day it won’t be a dream.
I spent Sunday afternoon with a bunch of kids from the Reel Kids Fishing Club. This is a Kids club for the kids in western Wisconsin. They invited me to come and talk to them about fishing. I set up all my St.Croix rods with baits and lures that I would use through out the year. I explained to them when I would use these baits and under what conditions the baits worked best. With over 20 kids there they all seemed very eager to learn and came up with a lot of great questions. Each kid had to either answer a question or ask one. Each kid was then awarded a number for a chance to win some great prizes. Here are a couple of pictures of some of the great prizes award this night.
As the night came to and end and all the prizes were given away I saw something I never expected…smiles, smiles and more smiles. When I saw these smiles I knew that I had to thank some sponsors that made this happen. These kids were so proud of what they had received. Almost every kid came up to me and thanked me for all the goodies they got….and they got tons. Some kids were so excited that they told there dad that they wanted to go try them this weekend.
This could of never happened if it wasn’t for some of these great people. B-Fish-N tackle for the ringworms, superdoos and jigs, Fin-tech for there Knuckle ball jigs, Dave Koonce for the www.in-depthangling.com stickers, Cotton Cordell for the Wally Divers, Smithwick for the suspending rogues, Rebel for the Rebel Minnows, Gander Mountain for the stickers, hats and pens, Northland Tackle for there mimic minnow, rattle jigs and specialty bag, Evinrude for the hats, and Wagner of there tackle boxes. As you can see each kid received a lot of great goodies. These sponsors are the ones to thanks, you guys made a difference in each one of these kids eyes.
If you live near the Alma area( Winona, Wabasha, Durand, Arcadia, Cochrane, Fountain City, Mondovi, Buffalo City) and you think your kids would be interested in joining a fishing club feel free to give Brian Brecka a call. 1-608-685-6221 or email him at [email protected] . They meet once a month and take various fishing trips throughout the year. Each kid is eligible for becoming the “Angler of the Year”. The kid that catches the most species in one year becomes the “Angler of the Year”.
Story behind single member photo:

Way to go!! Keeps kids off the streets and out of trouble when they are into any kind of outdoor sports. But FISHING is the best. If you are feeling down just grab a pole and go where ever there is a place to fish. Always seem to forget about your troubles and looks much better later.
Just so good to see a kids face lite up when they get even the smallest fish on a line. Love It I will take a kid fishing any day
Looking for more info on these kids clubs. Does anyone know of any around the twin cities?
Mick. Welcome aboard. I have never heard of a international fishing contest. Sounds very interisting. It sounds like they teach the kids to fish for a wide varity of fish. Thats a great way to keep the kids interisted.
Any info would be great.
Welcome aboard Mick. Please feel free to share your knowledge with working with kids groups to teach them fishing anytime. Kids are the future of our sport and we are the ones who can get them hooked on fishing. Thanks, Bill
