This weekend was no different than the last 3 weeks….the bite was on!!! We are talking some serious crappie fishing. We had our annual family fishing get together in Park Rapids, but this year everyone wanted to head up to Red Lake for a day of Crappie Fishing. As you will hear, the bite was nothing short of fantastic.
We got set up on the lake at 1:30 trying to get in on the day bite we have enjoyed the last 2 1/2 weeks. It was a matter of seconds when Gary & Todd had slabs laying on the ice. It didn’t take me long to quit drilling holes and get to fishing. Before I could get my rod out and fish, my dad Gary had his limit of fish. Here is Gary with two of his trophies from the day.
Before I sat down to fish I decided to check on my brother-in-law Todd. He was getting fish but not at the pace Gary was. When fishing Red Lake you can be off as little as 5ft and getting nothing. The fish just don’t move a lot during the day and you need to drill over their heads sometimes to get them to go. With a little adjustment in location Todd was on the fish. Here is Todd with a couple more dandies
A fish fry was on the agenda for the evening so keeping a limit was a must. Needless to say that took only about 20 minutes and then we preceded to C&R another 60 fish. Sean Colter joined our little spot later in the day and after checking with him, they were enjoying the bite as well. We were off the lake by 3:30 and on the way back to enjoy food and family. Red Lake is an amazing fishery and I look forward to being able to share it with my son Cole, who is approaching that age where he can tackle some of those huge slabs too. After two weekends off it is now time to get back to guiding! See ya on the water.
WOW…
Looks like a good time was had by all.
How is the snow conditions and mobility?
Now that I have my walking cast on, I think a short trip to URL is in order very soon! Just have to figure out a way to keep my foot warm, someone to drill all the holes, unload the shack, set up the shack, and then call me when all thats ready!! Any volunteers?
I’ll do it Steve… all for a modest “Guide Fee” Seriously though… I’m looking to get up there soon myself. My usual partner in crime (brother) had his back surgery 3 weeks ago.
Scott… you are killing me here with all these big slabs. I thought I told you to knock it off! Ok… keep the reports comming… just leave some slabs for the rest of us.
Thanks for the offer Travis….
However, I had to cancel on a Lake Trout expedition that I had planned for this coming weekend as well due to my injury!
Actually, it was a mild attempt to tell Scott to back off on the slab reports. I am afraid I would do something that I might regret. But, it seems as though I may have to be more stern with him!!
Nice crappies buddy!
You are a Crappie machine Scott. Nice fish. I talked to Kelly this morning and he said the bite is going crazy out of Hillmans road. $5 access fee and the road is in great shape.
too funny Steve. I have been sending him PM’s stating the same thing. The next thing I know, he’s got me booked for this Friday for a guide trip.
It was nice to meet you on Saturday Scott. (I was fishing w/Sean.) The bite continued to be hot after you left. Thanks for the pointers and the use of your auger. We were able to spend more time hoisting slabs through the ice and less time punching holes.
We were able to able to ice limits, CPR a mess of fish and be off the water to eat a burger while the sun was setting.
Thanks again.
Beno, nice meeting you too. Glad you guys were able to share in the action. It isn’t always that good, but has been “on” more that it has been “off’ this year.
