Clearwater West Lake trout

Just got back from a April 24-26 spring lake trout trip to Clear Water West Lake and surrounding lakes. Trout fishing was superb they were “up” in the water column from 8-17 feet.
On Monday we caught thirty trout the largest was ten pounds. The guys in cabin next to us had a 24lbs. on Saturday.

We used strip on spinners with either a cisco, sucker meat or minnows for bait. We trolled about 1.3 miles per hour right along the shallow breaks.

I don’t know if many of you have ever done a spring lake trout trip but it is a gas. They fight unbelievably hard and can be caught casting, trolling, dead baiting from shore and on fly rods. This is an unreal year very early ice out allowing ample time to get a trip in. We stayed at Brown’s Clearwater West Lodge (have been every year since 1978). The cabins are great, we rented a boat and motor on a smaller lake on Monday, dry Lund with great running Honda 15 hp. Brown’s number is 1-807-597-2884

I am back to fish Rainy, for the rest of the year. This will be the best spring fishing in years. The ice will have been gone for thirty five days by the Minnesota walleye opener. We are running a special May 15-22 for Idofishing members. All available houseboats are 50% off during this time period. Call now to make a reservation for spectacular spring fishing.
