Lake Puckaway, Wi. walleye fishing report

Fishing on Lake Puckaway has been pretty steady this year since early march. The walleyes spawned out in the river a week earlier and also a week early in the lake. The method we have been using in the river has been jigs in the weights of 1/32 to 1/16th once. We have been long lining and dragging most of the time with good results. Some days when the water is hitting 60 degrees a steady jigging motion was better. The baits of choice have been leeches, crawlers and still minnows are still working good. Colors for the jigs have been blue, orange and chartreaus working the best.

We also have been using light split shots set about a foot and a half from various colored hooks and beads as well for attracting the walleyes. Long lining these rigs are the key because we are only in about 5 to seven feet of water in the areas we are fishing. Some of the beads we are using are the soft colored glow beads that Cabelas sells in large packs and sizes. We are putting small plastic beads on with the glow ones to prevent them from sliding down on to the red hooks we are using.

We had some good days this past week with some 25 fish caught for the day. The fish have ranged from 7 inches all the way up to 26 1/2 inches for us. The trolling bite has been picking up this week also and will have a report on the trolling later this week.
