This winter has been difficult with the population of small perch in the lake. Which is why we have had a slow walleye bite. These perch have kept our walleyes well fed. There have been some reports of large walleye coming in from the deeper breaks off the reefs recently. The numbers are few and most are getting ready to pull the house and get ready for the open water season. Some resorts have already started to pull the houses off lake. The walleye season ends next weekend.
This perch that I have in my hand represents the size that we currently have schooling in the lake. These schools are very large in size. We have spent many hours viewing the underwater camera watching these perch. The size of these schools of perch are so large it takes minutes for them to swim past your viewing area.
This current class of perch will provide the fisherman on Mille Lacs some great fishing in two years. It is interesting to watch the cycles that our lakes go through. A year ago we did’nt have any perch left in Mille Lacs.
Now we have an exceptional amount of small perch to grow into the system.
Next weekend is the start to the big perch contests that are scheduled on mille Lacs. It will fun to see what size perch will be caught in these events. Every year someone hooks into some big Jumbo’s…….
