For those of you that are heading up this coming weekend for the annual Sturgeon Excursion here is a little preview of what you have to look forward to. Thursday night Jon J, Mike B, and myself headed up for the 1st of our 2 trips this year. Friday morning we didn’t get on fish rite away but with a little searching around they started to come in.
We started out Friday morning on familiar ground in front of the resorts by the landing. This was mostly due to the high NW winds blowing in. By noon not much had happened so we decide to head up river looking for other places out of the wind and that where a little less crowded. This paid off nicely for us. We didn’t find a good number bite up river but we did find quality fish that gave us plenty of action. Hear is a photo of Jon hooked into most likely the biggest fish of the weekend. A nice 57″er.
Up river we looked for bottle neck sections of the river to fish. We figured this would give us our best chance of intercepting the sturgeon as they made there way up the river. In these areas we tried to get set up on the edge of the deepest water. Along with this we also spent some time using the electronics to look for fish on the bottom. If we didnt get bit in the 1st 45 minutes on a spot we moved.
Baits of choice where pretty straight forward. Crawlers. 3oz no roll sinkers worked fine. As every year we tend to like the cut crawlers on our lines. Crawlers cut in halves or thirds work well for this.
Like I said earlier we never did get in on a good numbers bite like we have seen some years. For the weekend we caught only 3 or 4 small sturgeon. On the other hand we must of had around 15 in between 50 and 57″s. This was plenty good to keep us excited about the weekend.
Good luck to the guys that are heading up this week. We will see you up there bright and early Friday morning for our round 2 of sturgeon fishing this year.
A few more photos.
Thanks for the report Mike! The FW wants me to call in for work tomorrow and leave tonight!
Hey! Tell Mike B that’s not a sturgeon will ya?
Nice job Mike, see ya up there!!!!
PS I’m taking a cooler, gallon size plastic bags and the world famous Worm Slicer up there this year on your cut worm tip.
We did get a few suckers. The tails where nice and red and when they pose like the one Mike is holding its picture worthy. Any fish is fun to catch.
Awesome job on some great looking fish guys

As Mike W mentions, we make a move and head away from the other groups of boats and hit a spot up river where I had put a fish or two in the boat before. The move pays off! She was a little windy and cold for the start of the trip, but a fish like this one sure warms ya up! After that, its just a matter of finding other spots around with the same depth and current flow. Good Luck every one. Can’t wait to get back up next weekend!!!
