Red Lake SLABS

Once again Red Lake proved it is the crappie meca of the world. My dad has never had the chance to fish Red Lake for crappies so for his birthday we headed up to Red along with Adam and my brother-in-law Todd. After drilling our four holes it was a matter of about 2 seconds before my dad Gary iced his first 14 inch Red Lake slab. Click below for the rest of the action.

It didn’t take long to for Todd to get into the action and ice his first Red Lake Slab. The action was so fast you could not get your line down all the way. There is nothing like seeing your bait fall on you MarCum LX-3 and seeing 6-8 giant slabs racing up for it off the bottom. Something I am sure Gary and Todd will remember forever.

As the afternoon progressed we caught and released well over 90 crappies trying to top that 15 1/2 inch mark that I set last weekend. In the end we only had two fish that broke the 2 lb mark, and most were around that 1 1/2 pound size. Truely amazing fish! We actually had our 40 keeper fish in less than a half hour, but we were not there looking for keepers.

The walleye action alone on Red Lake is impressive. When you mix in the Pike and Crappies it is tough to beat. The next picture is a nice healthy 21 inch walleye caught by Gary.

We did make a stop at Winni on the way to Red Lake and the perch fishing was pretty good. Although the weather was cold the bite was not. We kept a couple limits of nice jumbos and has several "trophies" to show for our efforts. The last picture is me with one of our trophies on the day.LOL

  1. Truely some impressive slabs . Keep those reports coming Scott. Being house bound , these reports help me make it through the day .

  2. We’ll keep them coming. This is a busy guiding time for us. I know Adam will be on Winni 4 or 5 days over the next week and I will be on Red the next 3 weekends. We try hard to get good pictures, that is the hard part. Sometime it is hard to put down the rod and pick up the camera.LOL

  3. Did I hear you say that you only caught TWO crappies over two pounds?!?! Gee, Scott, you should be embarassed. Only two in one whole trip. I wouldn’t even report that if I were you, I’d be the laughing stock of MN. I’ve caught a whopping one two pounder my whole life and I have to be in the top ten of best crappie anglers in the state. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating somewhat but the one two pounder IS true. I’m sure there are plenty of guys who have NEVER caught one, maybe haven’t even come close. I suppose trips like that spoil a guy into thinking it can be done with ease. I’m going up next weekend and hope to have half the success you did. Nice report. Care to give me your GPS coordinates?? Just kidding.

  4. nice trip guys, super SLABS.. lakes just don’t make fish like that anymore. there is a treasure up there. sure is difficult to not make some plans to check it out. keep them reports and pics coming. Jack.

  5. Yes, Red Lake is sure a treasure. Fantastic fishing is an understatement. I am not sure how big that pout was, we snapped some pictures and put it back. We don’t believe in putting them on the ice. I think there is always someone out there that will enjoy the fight. Winni and LOW have to be the two best lakes for HUGE pout if you are into catching them. They are agressive and fight really hard.
