Pool 10 Mississippi River Ice Fishing 2/05/04

Today I spent the day with Andy Skemp on Pool 10 and although the fish weren’t jumping out of the holes there was some consistant action for crappie. We were fishing just outside an old lily pad field in about 2 foot of water.Little Mic’s , rembrants, moon glitters, rockers, it really didn’t matter, spikes, waxies, wedgies all worked too to catch fish like this 12+ inch crappie

The fish seemed to be on the move quite a bit…no one hole would produce better than another. I was starting my jig just below the ice and slowly lowering it down with some intermitten twitches to intice the fish below. Most all the crappies would just hammer the jig where the few gills that I caught were very light biters..This gill here just barely lifted my spring bobber.

All in all it was g real good day. I’d guess that Andy and I had 15 or 20 real nice crappie to take home for a meal, and I had to bug out early (around 4-4:30) so the better bite was missed.I had a real good time fishing with you Andy and I’m sure those crappie will get cooked up in some special way !!

  1. Hey Dave!! Nice crappie. Back from my cruise so intend to go get some of them babies.
See there is a tournament down there this week end on greymore lake. Think it would be worth checking into?

  2. The PdC Ice fisheree is for not just Greymore but for a large area around Prairie… Greymore has been pretty dead with the low water levels…

When are we going to get back out ? And How was your cruise ? I can’t wait to hear the stories !!!!

  3. Way to go on the crappies dave, they look liked some nice slabs. We really got into them up there at praire 2 weeks ago. I was wondering if anyone had any info on the tournament tomorrow in the Gremore area, like the registration fee, location for sign up, payouts for each category, etc. any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  4. The cruise was the most awsome thing I’ve done in a long time. I’m ready to go again as soon as I get some of those greenbacks saved again for it. Next time I will drive to Fl. to do a cruise. Costs less than half of what it would by going through a tour place. Were several persons who had done that. Sure did meet some very nice people on there. Even got a tan. Hahaha
I’m ready to go and get some of them slabs any time you say grab your geer and be at a certain place to meet.

Did you get the recipe’s I’d sent by pm?

  5. The recipes were recieved with a huge smile and just as big of a Thank You !!

Mary, I’ll shoot you a pm as to my schedule and then lets talk about meeting up…

  6. Glad to hear the recipe’s came through OK. Will be watching for your pm.
Has anyone seen or heard about the new lazier ice auger? Don’t think I spelled that right but you get the idea. They say they are awsome. Very light and quiet. And through the ice in seconds. Sounds like it would be the ticket for me to handle.

  7. Mary, do you mean the electric one? If so, I got the priveledge to use one today. They are excellent machines, very handy, as you can run them off a car battery, 4 wheeler, whatever you have. I would guess that they weigh almost the same as a gas auger, but you dont have the smell, no pulling ropes, and it will always work no matter what. I was impressed with the fit and finish, the buttons are layed out well, seems like a good machine.

  8. Thanks Dave. I only have a bit of info on them. But I have seen the one run on a car battery last year already. Seemed to me it was as noisy as a gas one. I have a son that is going to check in on it for me. This lazer one is suppose to be just new out. I will keep you and others posted as soon as I find out more.

  9. I will still take and pour some gas into one for 1/3 to 1/2 the price!!! The weight can’t be that different either, though I don’t know the exact wieght of my Jiffy 3hp.

  10. Looks like the prices listed were in Canadian dollars, so they are about the same price as a gas auger (I don’t know the current exchange rate and didn’t bother to look).

  11. Thanks Gianni. I’m thinking that is the one this guy was talking about. Said it cost him around a bit over 300. But went in with another guy on it. Said he can just fling it over his shoulder and take off. Well I guess at those prices I’ll be using my Mexican one that is run manual.

  12. rvvrrat:

Thanks for clearing that up for me with the Canadian currency!!! Now my interest level is peaking a little bit.
