March River Bassen

Hello everyone. My name is Kris Brantner. This is my first report for IDO but I am sure many of you have seen me around both sites for some time. I have been fishing since as long as I can remember, but specifically bass fishing for about the last 7 or 8 years. Only the last couple of years I have been fishing tournaments but I had a pretty good year last year, cashing a check in every tournament I fished. I am on the water 4+ days a week so I should have a few good reports for you over the spring, summer, and early fall.

I started off the weekend with a phone call from a buddy of mine saying that he needed my help. He was trying to crappie fish, but the bass wouldn’t leave him alone. I told him I would be the right guy for the job. I fished with him up there last year but never this early. It is bay wayyyyyy back up on 5a, where you can only get a boat with a mud motor back into.

So early this morning we launch the duck boat and head up into the middle of no where. After hitting a few logs and jumpimg a beaver dam we arrive at the "crappie" hole. It didn’t take long before I was catching largemouth. All were hanging on laydowns in about 6-7 ft of water. I caught them on everything including jigs, brush hogs, worms and a few on a spinnerbait. Most were small, 10-12 inchers, but I did manage to land the first two 3lbers of the year, and a couple other 2.5 lbers. My buddy did catch some nice crappies as well and left the bass fishing up to me. I do not know what is wrong with some people…

All and all it was a GREAT way to break the ice after a LOOOOOONG catching a few quality bass on MARCH 14! Who wants to fish for walleyes anyways!?!? I apoligize as the pictures are from a camera phone…

  1. Nice job on the bass man. How much ice is left out there? I have been kind of half a** getting the boat ready. Looks like i need to hurry it up…?
