Mississippi River Pool 4 Let the games begin!!

Well it has been a very LONG winter for myself and many others. This weekend brought the first “warm” spell to the river, and the fish did not disappoint. I spent Friday through Sunday on the river with a few good friends. As always its a pleasure fishing with you all and will do it again soon…

I spent the majority of my time looking for bigger fish that I knew had to be starting to show up soon. I spent my mornings and afternoons in search of the big fish and spent the late afternoon and evening getting a few fish for the box. My morning and mid-day presentations included mainly blades and pitching a few plastics to pick up a few more fish.
We spent the majority of our time focusing on depths in the 8 to 15 foot range. Our fish came off of both rocks and sand. Without much current yet I have yet to see any prefernce as to location and structure that they seem to be holding to. Our best colors for the weekend would have to be firetiger, black, or white.

The late afternoon dragging bite has been good, as many people have mentioned and experienced. With the many boats that were out there this weekend I elected to think outside of the box and try dragging some different locations rather than joining the crowd, and it paid off. Ringworm colors have been all over the board for me the last couple days. The most consistant colors have been firetiger, purple chart tail, and chart orange core. Firecracker, pro-blue, and catalpa also caught fish. My best advice there is to start with your most confindent color and keep switching until you find what the fish want.

The bite should only get better from here on out. I would be looking for things to change on a daily basis, so what works today may not be working tomorrow. With warm temps this week I would assume that we should get some more flow and a little color in the water, and that should only help the mid-day bite. I am looking forward to seeing many familiar faces and some new ones this weekend at the Freeze Your Butt tourny and through out the rest of the spring.

Until next time…………
