Wisconsin bluegills and perch report.

With the barometer up high this week I was doing guide trips all week for the bluegills and perch. The meter read over 30.10 just about every day. Some days steady and some day it was climbing higher yet. But the fish just kept on the feed bag all week. We were fishing on Lake Puckaway up in some fingers on the Fox river with great results. We would not do any fishing till we drilled holes and saw fish on the camera. Some of the canals were just stacked with several kinds of bait fish of all sizes. Once we found gills and perch on the camera we set up the tents and fished. Here is a picture of June and Henry with their fish from the day.

We were using small Mamooska jigs tipped with red spikes and wax worms. The best colors were green & yellow , orange and yellow with the perch stipes on them. We worked the jigs about 3 feet of the bottom and slowly jigged and lowered them to the bottom. Most of the hits would come in this area of the 6 feet of water we were fishing in. Some of the holes you could see small bugs coming up the hole and we knew it was going to be good fishing, with the fish feeding on the bugs.

It was Rods first time on the ice this year and what a blast he had getting the bigger perch this week. We had some good conversations and the fishing was fast that day as well. We were pulling the perch out one after another for about 2 hours of fishing and then a northern came in spook the fish around for awhile. We got bit off by the northern and he must have moved on because the perch bite picked up again. Heres Rod with his fish for the day.

Troy and his son had a great rip also but this day was mostly gills which was fine for them . We were using the camera and the vexilar for the first time for them and they were amazed on how well they worked as a tool for catching fish. We used the same jigs as mention earlier with great success today. They said we never caught fish like this before and had a great time fishing. Heres a pic. of some of their gills from the trip.

  1. Good to see you are getting into some nice gills. Especially good to see your dad and mom back out fishing as his recovery from the stroke has been just great. Weather forecast looks like you should have good ice for awhile.
