I had the pleasure of fishing with some very good friends on saturday. Here is Rick Puckett of DeWitt Ia. and Gary Ackerman of Bellevue Ia. Both are very avid fisherman.
We decided to fish Cattail Slough on Pool 14. This slough averages about 12 ft of water and is also feed by numerous springs. We concentrated mostly on outside bends and points that had dead falls on them with these springs close by.
Our best presentation was a tear drop jig tipped with a wax worm. Most of the fish caught were just off the bottom within a foot or so. The bite was slow, but the fish we took were decent. The average size gills were 8 in. with an occasional 9 and 9.5 incher comming through the hole.
I would just like to thank Rick and Gary for making my first time on the ice this winter a fun one. Hopefully we can do it again very soon.
Way to go guys!
Thanks Herb . I had a blast being on the ice for the first time this winter. I hope to get out alot more int the next couple of weeks. Talk to you later.
Nice report Tony,,,Nice gills also,, Yum Yum,,
Hey river rat…
I’ve been wanting to fish cattail slough in the spring or summer but it also looks promising in the winter. With 12 ft. of water there do you catch any crappie? What kind of ice thickness did you have with all those springs around. How would Iget there from the boat landing at Fulton does that stretch in front of the landing freeze over good. Thanks BIGJIGGER2002
BIGJIGGER20002, There was 6inches of ice at the boat lauch. I talked to a couple of guys there saturday and they were not having much luck in front of the ramp. We were about two mile south of the ramp that day. All the holes that I drilled, we had 6+ inches of ice. The crappie bite came late in the day at sunset. If you would like anymore info. I would be more than willing to help you out. One other thing, there is much deeper water than 12ft. The deepest water that I have found there is 21ft. I would suggest that if you plan of fishing there, I would walk the edges of the banks until you get to know the area better.
river rat.. Thanks for the information this spot sounds like pretty unpredictable ice situations it also sounds like a very long walk I guess I’ll wait till spring or fall to fish this spot with the boat is it any good at these times of the year. BIGJIGGER2002
