Walleye / Perch Report, Alexandria 1/9/10

Boy it was cold out again Saturday night! The bite was a little slower than normal, but I can’t complain. We managed some nice eaters and one fat 28″er CPR’d. We even ran into about a dozen jumbos. They averaged around 9-10″+, mmmmm!

We set up right on the outside edge of the weed line in 18 FOW. The standing weeds are still visible on the locator, but they are really laying down over the last couple weeks. Tonight we seemed to have equal success on jigging rods and set lines. On the set lines I run 6-8lb test fluorocarbon with a plain #4 – #6 Gamakatsu hook. Then I use a small to medium sized shiner, hooked slightly through the back. As for the jigging rod, I was using a 1/8oz Frostee spoon tipped with a half a fathead. The perch bit early in the evening and once the sun neared the horizon it was all walleye action. We caught a couple more walleye after dark and then decided to head home.

On a side note, as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I used Vexilars for over 15 years. There was nothing wrong with them, but I eventually came to the conclusion there was a better product out there. So this year I switched my units over to Marcum LX5’s. I’ve been extremely happy so far! The screen seems to be much crisper and clearer on these units. The movable zoom feature is also very nice. I fished next to an FL-8 in a two man house and I was able to switch the cone angle to narrow beam. This allowed me to only pick up my lure, instead of seeing the guys lure next to me too. Then a quick couple clicks of the IR (interference) button and we were set. I was really curious how these units were going to work fished so closely to each other, but it was not an issue.

I can’t wait for the warm weather that’s on its way! I plan to go hole hopping for more of those Jumbo Perch and then of course set up for more of those tasty walleye! Good luck everyone.

I bought my first boat when I was 13 and I've spent about every day since on the water or ice. I do most of my guiding on MilleLacs and in the Alexandria Lakes area.
