The bite on Lake of the Woods is going good right now. I have seen better years and more fish. But we had nothing to complain about on our trip. My gal Carrie and I saw a great bite that was consistent each day.
We got to Zippel Bay Resort after leaving Red lake and cleaned up our crappies we had caught and put them in the fry pan for dinner. We headed out in the morning and started fishing with Scenic Tackle Glow Devils and Angel Eyes. We were set up in 29 feet of water on the mud. Our bobber lines were rigged with gold #6 Demon Glows tipped with spottail shiners that we picked up from Fred’s Bait in Deer River. The bite started around 10am and would slow down until about 2pm. The fish were aggressive and really smacking the bobber lines and spoons. On this trip, the yellow Glow Devil really produced well. The gold and firetiger did good but that yellow really got some attention.
Most of our fish were walleyes and saugers in the 12-16 inch range. Lots of 14 inch good eating sized fish. Surprisingly, we caught more walleyes than saugers in that deep of water. There were times when all four lines had fish on. We caught more jumbo perch on this trip than in years past. We saw lots of nice perch being weighed in at the resort which was a good sign.
We averaged about 15-20 walleye and sauger per day and 5-10 jumbo perch per day. Getting enough for a meal was no problem not to mention bringing back a few home. We caught a few Tullipee and did not get any Burbot or Pike. It was a fun trip for the both of us. Our normal group could not make it up with us. Sometimes that can be ok too. My gal and I haven’t spent that kind of time together fishing in a long time and we had a blast. We both agreed it was less stressful planning for just the two of us not to mention the room we had in a cabin that slept 7 people. We also met fellow In-depth member Wadsworth in the bar for cocktails at the resort Thursday night and made some new friends. Our only complaint is the time went by too fast. 7 days is just not enough.
Nice report Derek….good to see some jumbo perch thrown in the mix.
Even better to see some thrown in some oil.
Boy does that look good Derek!
ITs lunchtime and you just gave me a great idea to go and unthaw some fish!!
Thank you.
Those fillets in the pan were from perch that were caught the same day on our trip. Served along side wild rice and roasted potatoes and a cold longneck bottle of Labatts.
It just doesnt get any better than that.
Man does that sound fantastic Derek! I love eatin’ fresh fillets and drinking beer after a good day fishing!
