Alexandria Walleye Bite Stays Hot!

Over the last week and half, the walleye action has remained very good. We are consistently pulling limits of eaters with a couple big girls mixed in. I figured the last storm would have put the hurt on the bite but it hasn’t bothered them at all. I’ve been fishing on a few different lakes and they have all been kicking out decent walleye.

I’ve been predominantly fishing in the mornings and evenings near standing weeds. These weeds are holding large numbers of perch and as soon as that sun starts to come up or go down the eyes move into feed. I’ve been having my best luck in 12′ to 18′ FOW.

I’m always trying different baits and there are a ton of great lures on the market, but I always seem to come back to a good old fashion spoon. I’ve been using the 1/8-3/16oz perch or white glow Frostee spoons.

No matter what spoon you use, I’d recommend just tipping them with a 1/2 a fathead. Then pound your bait into the bottom a few times. After that give it a jig up a foot or so. Then let the bait fall naturally and before it hits bottom hold it suspended off bottom a few inches. Hold it there or give it a little quiver and Wham Fish On! It’s really that easy. This technique is nothing new to many of you, but it has iced way too many walleye for me to not mention it again.

If any of you are looking for a quick trip this weekend come on up to Alexandria and enjoy some of the most consistent walleye action the state has to offer. Good Luck!

I bought my first boat when I was 13 and I've spent about every day since on the water or ice. I do most of my guiding on MilleLacs and in the Alexandria Lakes area.

  1. Nice work Joe!

You mentioned that most of what you’re catching is coming near standing weeds. Are you starting to see those weeds lay back a bit more as the days move by? Any features in the weeds that you’re looking for specifically?

Joel, I went out tonight and the weeds are still a few feet high. The weeds show up very easily on the locator and are filled with perch until the sun starts to go down. Tonight I sat right on the outside weed edge with a jigging spoon and was able to catch a nice meal of walleye for tomorrow

Thanks for all the comments Guys!

I hope everyone that contacted me and said they were heading up here fishing, had good luck! It was cold, but the way the fish have been cooperating I’m sure it was worth your effort!

Also, still be careful when driving on the ice. I heard three vehicles went through over the past week. Even though most of the lakes have over a foot I’ve heard of many people drilling into MUCH less than that. Just make sure if you’re going to drive, that you know the lake and have your windows down. None of us want to here of anyone getting hurt.

    Good luck

  3. Thanks Jack.

Lip You should just call next time! I just saw your post right now. Fishing was slower this weekend but we still got a bunch of nice fish. I’ll post a couple pics later. How did you end up doing?

  4. Boy was it cold out again Saturday night! The bite was a little slower than normal, but I can’t complain. We managed some nice eaters and a fat 28″er. We even ran into about a dozen jumbos. They averaged around 9-10″, mmmmm!
