The weather looks like it is going to hold for a couple of more days. The sauger bite is fantastic right now for both quality and quantity.
I had a pleasure of spending the day on the water with In-Depth staff member Kerry Harvey. Though the methods remain the same, the bite is getting better as winter wears on. We started out below the Y jigging Doos and bucktails. My first few fish were taken on the hair but the action on Doos soon started to happen. We were hitting fish but decided to look for faster action.
The rest of the morning and early afternoon we spent up above the Y. The best action was coming on the Doos but fish were also being taken on ringies. Bewteen the two of us a combination of about six colors were used. The best producers were white, ice blue, and chart. If the action slowed, a color switch usually triggered the bite again. the best depths ranged from 16 to 21 ft.
We finished off the day boating a few more fish below the Y. In total we ended with 70+ saugers, with a solid 50 being eater size and bigger. 10 or so were the big piggies. Staying vertical and adjusting colors to the light condition were a couple of key factors in our presentation.
Kerry will post a couple of pictures later. The bite is on so get out and enjoy! See ya on the water, Don
Don, Thanks for the fun day on the water. It was good to see you put the minnows away and go with all plastic. The photo below proofs an old dog can learn a new trick.
This is one of the better sauger we had today.
