Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 10-12-09

The Fall Walleye fishing on mighty river has been very good for my boat. The big walleyes have not been camera shy on my last 3 trips !

The only consistent presentation for my boat has been to mix it up, meaning, do not get locked on to one single bait. Big walleye have come to the boat on ringworms, k-grubs, hair jigs, paddle tails and crank baits. Being able to pattern a best color or bait has been tough to do. The key has been targeting shallow water along riprap. Once an area with good numbers of walleye has been found, work um over good with several offerings

Best fish on the last 3 trips was Scott Frame’s 10.9lb Walleye . Scott took this big sow in about 5’of water on a #7 shad rap. The crank bait was good to Scott on this day with some other big walleye falling victim to his crank bait as well . The rest of Scot’s eyes will be pictured below. Scott had a walleye just shy of 10lbs on our trip last Fall. It was nice to see you brought you’re A game on this day while topping last years catch! Congrats on the fish of a lifetime Scott This fish was released in hopes of seeing another anglers net. I want to thank you and Chuck for spending another Fall day in my boat. I am already looking forward to next years trip!

I had the chance to fish with Dave Koonce, former owner of B-fish’n tackle, and his brother Dan Koonce. The walleye bite was very good for the three of us on this day. Dave boated his two biggest eyes of the day on a hair jigs, my best fish came on a 3/16oz sour apple precision jig head tipped with a firecracker k-grub. This bait is always good for a big walleye or two when water temps are hovering in the 50 degree range. I had another big walleye on an oyster shell paddle tail. Dan’s best walleye came on a crank bait.

There will be much more detailed information to see from my trip with Dave and Dan. Stay tuned for further details later in the week! Dave, as always, it was a riot to fish with you again! Thanks to you and Dan for spending a day in my boat.

Sorry that I have no information on the Sauger bite. I would venture to guess the Sauger are on the chew as well if you can find them.

Get out and do some Fall fishing!

I’ll see you on the river!

  1. Dustin !!!
What a blast !!! My brother and I had a a great time and I know for sure that Dan will remember this trip for ever !!!

    Thanks Buddy !!!

  2. Why did I spend Sunday looking for Saugers?????????
    DuMb, DuMb, duMb.

great fish dusty, was going to tailpipe you sunday but you left the dock right when I was pulling in. From what I have read, tailpiping is a GREAT way to find the fish on pool 4–maybe I better leave that subject alone post the past tourney season.

  3. Dustin,

You are the man!! You are really on the BIG Walleyes this fall, congrat on some great fishing

Going to fish some P3 wing dams later in the week and hope some of your tips will help.

  4. Great report Dustin!! Wade and I will be up there next weekend (23,24,25th). We’re planning on fishing Fri, Sat, and a little Sun. morning. Hope you’ll be around??? The campfire won’t be the same without you.

  5. SSSSooo happy to see you are getting out on the river again and having some fun. Looks like you haven`t missed a beat.

I have to agree nothing worse than watching all these guys take all there buddies to a great spot after a tournament is won there.
The only down fall to tournament fishing alot of secrets get exposed.

    Nice fish Dustin

  7. Nice fish Dustin. Just watched your Reel Report video and it looks like you guys had a fun day on the water. There has been a pretty good pitching bite going up here on pool 2 this last week also. You hit it rite on the head with lure selection. Keep changing it up. I would say our best choices of late have been purple or blue hair jigs, Purple/chartreuse ring worms or firetiger/chartreuse paddle tails or k grubs. Other than that try what ever you have tied on the end of the line because some days they seem to hit just about anything.

A guys got to love the river conditions rite now. Looks like plenty of good action to come this fall.
