Mississippi River Pool 9 Ice Fishing 1/9/03

What a beautiful day to be out on the ice on the Mississippi River Back Waters !! I hit the ice at 7am this morning and with all the cold weather we have been getting the ice conditions where i’m at are great !!6 inches at the thin spots and 12 inches where i’m fishing..

The bite is still rather slow but the quality of the fish has been nothing short of SUPER !! I took this shot from inside my Otter Small Den(nice and cozy in there !!)

I’m still not getting more than one or two fish out of a hole with any consistancy…If i sit in one spot they will come to me but just not fast enough for myself..

At 14 degrees this morning I didn’t spend much time outside my Otter but when I did gills like this were coming on a yellow rocker tipped with a spike.

I would spend about 30 minutes or so outside my ice house and then back in i would go to the warmth of my Otter and the heater i had going inside !!!

It seamed that the break from fishing inside the tent brought the fish back and i was able to pull more fish out from within my ice house like this crappie !!

Well when the bite gets slow in the house,,,time to go on a walk about…I had drilled about 10 holes when i first arrived. And it didn’t take long for them to freeze up, but nothing like a boot heal and an ice scooper to open them back up.In no time i was back on fish…The gills seemed to vacate the area for the most part and the crappie moved in..I guess by noon I had about 20 crappie and 5 gills, usually it’s the other way around. But when the crappie look like this 13 inch brute i didn’t mind.

remember to click on the pictures to see them in their original size

  1. After a morning of fishing, there is nothing better than a frozen pizza and a beer while writing my fishing report..

  2. Nice Crappie Dave ! I can expect to get at least 20 to 30 of those slabs when I come down for the ice fishing get together………..right?

  3. Dave,

Way to go on the fish, looked like some nice crappies and gills . Hows the fishing been in the PDC area lately? Heading up that way tomorrow and sunday and wondering if the bites been on. Heard they were getting some fish on the Little Missouri. How deep of water did u get most of them in?

  4. Sounds like Little Mo. is about your best bet around PdC right now…My fish have been coming from about 18 inches of water..

    Good luck !!

  5. Beer and pizza waiting for me at my hole when I arrive on Saturday morning!! Gotta love it.

    Nice fish buddy…
Just a quick heads up on fishing tackle!
What pound line are you getting away with right now?
    Waxies, spikes, etc…

    See you next Saturday!

  6. 4 mil poly with a fas loc connector , and a moon glitter or a rocker will do just fine …tip that with a waxie or a spike and you’ll be on fish like davey on a Michelob Light !!

  7. Oh yeah sure, just let out all these secrets for the world to see!!!!!
Oh wait, that’s what you’re here for, isn’t it?!
