Rainy Lake, Minnesota fishing report 10-06-09

Fall has blown in faster than the leaves can change color. Water temps have plummeted over the past week, and the big fish are fired up!! The Fall Super Donk Slabfest/Eye Catching/Yikes what a Pike EXTRAVAGANZA has definately been fantastic. Whether anglers have chose to focus energies on Walleyes, Pike or Crappies the rods have been getting a workout. Minnows are extra anxious in the baitwell as they are not feeling comfortable about soaking in these frenzied waters!!

Several patterns are producing in a big way here in the start of Pumpkin month. As is often the case anglers have the flexibility to fish techiniques they have confidence in to boat BIG BIG fish. Here in the Daze Casket we’ve targeted Big eyes and crappies unable to resist H20 Precision jigs. Depending on the wind and weather we’ve pitched 1/8 oz. for slabs, and 3/16 oz. for big walleyes. Plastics are also becoming a very viable option for those who love to fish artificials. Keep in mind big baits are really starting to be key in triggering the biggest and baddest. Many of our big fish this week have had Ciscoe or smelt remnants in thier mouths. BTW these forage fish are big….6-8 inches!! Keeping your radar on the baitfish movements will likely keep you in the kitchen of Rainy Lakes trophy fish.

Fall fishing conditions really stack the deck for anglers targeting trophy fish. While fish have the inner sense to bulk up for winter they become a bit more vulnerable to hook and line. In many peoples opinion there is a key formula to success; Fishing trophy waters + During Key Timeframes+ Where the fish are Hanging = some of your best chances at boating a PB!! Trophy fish are a lot like Trophy Bucks, and without a doubt most accessible at select times of the year………Folks this is the PRIMO SELECT TIME!!

Our Wood boiler has been called into action, and the leaves are creating the backdrop for some of the most beautiful fall trips of the year. Your gonna need to leave the fair weather boys out of this trip as bibs and warm weather gear may very well be called into use. BUT….If you want some of the most consistent big fish action of the year I’d suggest putting down the shotgun, and grabbing your fishing rods!! We’ll see you on the water!! We’ll be the boys with the net out!! Tight lines Team!!

  1. Nice fish Chris, Good to hear that size is improving you’re getting into that plastic bite!

Sure wish plastics were going when we were up there for the GTG. Oh well, always next year

    Thanks for the Report

  2. Hey Pete!!

Yeah I know I guess we just had to suffer through boatloads of puny 20-26 inch fish besides my buddies 28 for the camera!! LOL!! Yes when it comes to both plastics and big beasts during the fall water temps can play a critical role. I’ve got a pocket full of Kgrubs and Precision jigs, and I’m going field testing today……..Hmnnn Water testing!! LOL!! Win…Lose……OR DRAW I’ll give you some straight talk should I be able to pull myself off the water

    Yep, Pretty rough

  4. Had a tough Plastics bite this morning as the fish seemed to be between Nuetral and negative. Did some exploring and got onto a deep water slab bite by accident. NICE!! Ended up tying on a 24 inch mono lead to my 3/16 oz. H20 precision jigs, and then it was LIGHTS OUT FOR EVERYTHING. Pike,Some big slot eyes, limit of 15-16 inch walleyes and some nice 12-13.5 inch slabs. SOMETIMES…..SOMETIMES that Mono lead helps turn nuetral fish over the edge for those like me utilizing Braid!! Deep Clay/Rock Transition areas……….HOT!!
